Saint-Julien-de-Crempse is a village and a former French commune of 225 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Dordogne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belonged to the Arrondissement of Périgueux (until 2016: Bergerac ) and the canton of Périgord Central (until 2015: Canton of Villamblard ).

The decree of September 25, 2018, with effect from January 1, 2019, incorporated Saint-Julien-de-Crempse as the Commune déléguée together with the former municipalities of Maurens , Laveyssière and Saint-Jean-d'Eyraud to form the Commune nouvelle Eyraud-Crempse -Maurens feast . The administrative headquarters are in Maurens.

The name in the Occitan language is Sent Júlian de Cremsa and is derived from St. Julian.

The inhabitants are called Saint-Julienois and Saint-Julienoises or Saint-Juliénois and Saint-Juliénoises .

Saint-Julien-de-Crempse is located about 30 km southwest of Périgueux and about 12 km north-northeast of Bergerac in its catchment area ( Aire urbaine ) in the Landais area of the historic province of Périgord .

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 520 in the second half of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of Saint-Julien-de-Crempse decreased to around 130 inhabitants before the 1970s, with brief recovery periods there was a phase of moderate growth that continues today.

Events during World War II

As a retaliatory action due to attacks by the Resistance near Saint-Julien-de-Crempse, in which several German soldiers were killed, members of the 2nd SS Panzer Division "Das Reich" surrounded the village on August 9, 1944 and killed them 11 members of the Forces françaises de l'intérieur and 17 civilians. On August 24, 1944, 82 German soldiers surrendered to the French forces in the fighting for Bergerac against the assurance that they would be treated as prisoners of war. On September 9, 1944, resistance fighters killed 17 of these prisoners in an act of revenge.

On November 4, 2003, the 17 soldiers buried in an unmarked mass grave were exhumed in a small ceremony and later buried in a military cemetery.
