Saint-Rémy-la-Varenne is a town and commune Déléguée in the French commune of Brissac Loire Aubance with 971 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Maine-et-Loire in the region of Pays de la Loire . The residents are known as Les Saint-Rémois .

geography

Saint-Rémy-la-Varenne is located on the left bank of the Loire , halfway from Saumur to Angers . The municipality was part of the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Nature Park .

history

In the village is the Dolmen de la Bajoulière . The place name Remy , the name of a saint, appeared for the first time in the 12th century and replaced the Gallo-Roman name Chiriacus (estate of Carus or Carius).

From 1343 the state claimed the monopoly on salt by a decree of King Philip IV and introduced a salt tax called Gabelle . The Anjou was one of the countries with the so-called large Gabelle , which affected 16 municipalities, including Saint-Rémy-la-Varenne. The salt tax was particularly unpopular and, along with the waistline, is a prime example of the unjust tax system of the Ancien Régime , which is considered to be one of the main causes of the outbreak of the French Revolution .

The municipality of Saint-Rémy-la-Varenne was founded on December 15, 2016 with nine other municipalities, namely Brissac-Quincé , Charcé-Saint-Ellier-sur-Aubance , Chemellier , Coutures , Luigné , Les Alleuds , Saint-Saturnin-sur- Loire , Saulgé-l'Hôpital and Vauchrétien merged to form the new municipality of Brissac Loire Aubance.

economy

Economically, Saint-Rémy-la-Varenne is mainly agricultural. There is large acreage for corn, wheat, sunflowers, vegetables and wine. In addition, there are fruit crops, poultry and cattle breeding and milk production.

Viticulture has been practiced in Anjou and Touraine since the early Middle Ages. From the period between the 6th and 10th centuries there are many examples in which ecclesiastical and secular princes and monks planted and maintained vineyards. Venantius Fortunatus described the dark wines of the Cariacus estate near the Loire in the 6th century. In 1988 it was found out that this property must have been near Saint-Rémy-la-Varenne.

Attractions

One of the local attractions is the Saint-Remy church from the 11th to 14th centuries. Behind the church are some buildings dating back to the 15th century, which belonged to a Benedictine abbey founded in 929 . The chapter house and various architectural decorations from the Renaissance should be emphasized . For some time now, major construction work to reconstruct and maintain the buildings of the former priory has been underway. To support these efforts, the "Association Prieuré" organizes a pumpkin festival called Les Hortomnales every Halloween .

The figurative representations at the gate of the priory show a chained monkey and a lion. In the animal symbolism of this time, a crouching, tied up or chained monkey means people in the snares of sin. It is a pictorial sermon: as showmen lead a monkey around, so sin makes people a ridiculous monkey; the chain leads directly into hell's mouth. The lion can mean different things, but in this context is to be seen as a symbol of Satan, according to the Bible verse: "Be sober and watch; for your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion and seeks whom to devour." (1 Peter 5,8)

In the vicinity of the village is the Dolmen de la Bajoulière ; this “Angevin” type dolmen dates from the Neolithic period around 4500 BC. BC and is the largest in Anjou.
