The district of San Salvador de Quije is located in the province of Sucre in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was established on May 21, 1962. It has an area of 142 km². The 2017 census counted 1048 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1430, in 2007 it was 1600. The district administration is located in the 3210 m high town of San Salvador de Quije with 262 inhabitants (as of 2017). San Salvador de Quije is located 12 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Querobamba .
Geographical location
The district of San Salvador de Quije is located in the Andean highlands in the north-east of the province of Sucre. It has a length in north-south direction of 23 km and a maximum width of 11 km. The Río Corimayo flows through the district in a northerly direction and finally flows into the Río Chicha . The latter limits the district in the northeast.
The San Salvador de Quije district is bordered to the west by the district Querobamba , on the north by the district Chilcayoc , in the northeast to the districts Chiara and San Miguel de Chaccrampa (both in the province of Andahuaylas ), in the southeast of the district Paico and on the south by the districts of Santiago de Paucaray and Soras .
