Sandy McCarthy (born June 15, 1972 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 759 games for the Calgary Flames , Tampa Bay Lightning , Philadelphia Flyers , Carolina Hurricanes , New York between 1989 and 2004 Rangers and Boston Bruins played in the National Hockey League on the right winger position . McCarthy embodied the player type of the Enforcer and collected nearly 1,600 penalty minutes in the NHL.
Career
McCarthy first spent a year with the Hawkesbury Hawks in the Central Junior A Hockey League between 1988 and 1989 , before moving from there to the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec for three years . In the service of Titan de Laval , the striker won the Coupe du Président with the team at the end of his rookie season . During the time in Laval McCarthy was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1991 in the third round in 52nd place by the Calgary Flames from the National Hockey League .
With the start of the 1992/93 season , the then switched power forward , the 90 in his last junior year points scorer was succeeded in the professional field and went after the contract signature in Calgary initially for their farm team , the Salt Lake Golden Eagles in the International Hockey League , on Ice. From the 1993/94 season McCarthy was active in the NHL for the Flames and was in their squad as an enforcer for the following four and a half years . It wasn't until March 1998 that the attacker left the team in exchange for Jason Wiemer for the Tampa Bay Lightning . With him, the Lightning also received a third- and fifth-round vote in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft . Two more years followed, in which McCarthy had to change clubs shortly before the trade deadline in March of the respective year. In the 1998/99 season he was released with the Swede Mikael Andersson to the Philadelphia Flyers , who sent Colin Forbes and a four-round vote in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft to Tampa. A year later, the Flyers exchanged him for Kent Manderville of the Carolina Hurricanes . McCarthy ended the 1999/2000 game year there .
Since the Hurricanes had no interest in continuing to employ the Canadian, they transferred him again after only 13 missions in the summer of 2000. With a four-round vote in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft , he was given in exchange for Darren Langdon and Rob DiMaio to the New York Rangers . In his new employer and for the following three seasons he found a new sporting home with the Rangers. With over 20 scorer points, he completed his personally most successful seasons in the 2000/01 and 2001/02 playing years. After his expiring contract was not renewed in the summer of 2003, the offensive player signed a contract with the Boston Bruins as a free agent . There he was only rarely able to build on the three successful years in New York, which means that the Bruins put him on the waiver list during the 2003/04 season and he could be signed by all other teams. The New York Rangers then secured his services again until the end of the season. After the 2004/05 NHL season fell victim to the lockout and McCarthy's player type was no longer in great demand, he no longer appeared in professional ice hockey and then ended his active career.
