history

In Roman times there was a simple settlement near Aeclanum . During the migration of the peoples , the place was rebuilt by the Lombards and gained a certain importance in the 13th century. The Castello Longobardo in the center of the village was built in the 10th century when the region belonged to the Duchy of Benevento . The Abbazia del Goleto ("Goleto Abbey") dates from 1133 and was built by Wilhelm von Vercelli . In later centuries the fief was subordinate to various noble families, including the Caracciolo and Imperiali .

On November 23, 1980, the Irpinia earthquake with a magnitude of 6.89 on the moment magnitude scale shook the regions of Campania and Basilicata and also caused great damage in Sant'Angelo.
