San Vicente del Raspeig ( Valencian Sant Vicent del Raspeig ) is a city in southeastern Spain in the province of Alicante in the Autonomous Community of Comunidad Valenciana .

history

The place name refers to Vinzenz Ferrer , who comes from a Valencian family and is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church . The place emerged as an independent municipality in 1836 when it separated from the city of Alicante .

In 1900 the place had only 4,041 inhabitants, but grew due to the proximity to Alicante. With the establishment of the University of Alicante in 1979, which is based in San Vicente, the population increased by leaps and bounds (1970: 16,518 inhabitants, 1981: 23,569, 1991: 30,119).

Location and traffic

The city is only about seven kilometers north of Alicante and can be easily reached from there by bus and car. A line of the light rail Alicante to San Vicente was completed in autumn 2011 and is to go into operation in September 2013. There are also connections to the Cercanías Murcia / Alicante . The city is located in the Alicante-Elche metropolitan area .
