Sarina Dijas (spelling also Dias , Kazakh Зарина Дияс / Диас , English transcription: Zarina Diyas; born October 18, 1993 in Almaty ) is a Kazakh tennis player .
Career
Dijas lived in the Czech Republic from 1999 to 2010 , where she began playing tennis at the age of six. Until 2010 she was trained in a Prague tennis club by Jaroslav Jandus. Therefore, in addition to her native Kazakh, she also speaks fluent Czech and English.
In 2008, Dijas made her debut on the WTA tour at the age of only 14 when she started qualifying for the WTA tournament in Prague with a wild card . That same year she won her first professional title at a $ 25,000 tournament on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour in Astana , followed by the next in 2009 in Vaihingen . This time in Prague she received a wildcard for the main field and defeated Kristina Mladenovic and Petra Kvitová there , in order to advance straight away to the quarter-finals, where she failed to Iveta Benešová . In 2010 Dijas qualified for the main draw of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow at the end of the season and celebrated her first win over a top 10 player there in the second round against top seed Jelena Janković .
In 2011 Dijas started in Melbourne for the first time in qualifying for a Grand Slam tournament, but was eliminated in the final round. After three years in which her performance largely stagnated and she was only able to win one ITF title in the $ 25,000 category in Buxoro , she qualified for the peloton at the Australian Open for the first time and came straight into the third round, where she only got off Simona Halep was stopped. Dijas then won her biggest title to date in a tournament in the $ 50,000 category in Quanzhou and moved into the top 100 of the tennis world rankings after another final in Nottingham . In Wimbledon , after victories over Carla Suárez Navarro and Wera Swonarjowa , she advanced to the round of 16 of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, where she again had to admit defeat to Simona Halep. By moving into the third round of the US Open and her first WTA final in Osaka , which she lost to Samantha Stosur , she was able to finish the season in the top 40 in the world for the first time. In doubles, she surprisingly reached the quarter-finals of the US Open on the side of Xu Yifan ; there they had to give up against the third placed Cara Black and Sania Mirza .
At the beginning of 2015 Dijas achieved her best world ranking position to date with position 31 and her second top 10 success in the second round of Dubai against Andrea Petković . At Wimbledon , as in the previous year, she was able to reach the second round after another victory over Petković, but she lost there Marija Sharapova in straight sets. After that, the form of Dijas weakened, who only managed one win in nine defeats by the end of the year and the season outside the top 50. In 2016 she had to end the season early after her first round elimination in London due to a wrist injury, from which she only returned in February of the following year. Since she had dropped out of the top 100 in the world rankings, she mainly competed on the ITF tour, where she won a tournament in the $ 100,000 category on grass in Manchester and worked her way up the ranking again. For her tournament victory she received a wild card from the organizers of Wimbledon and reached the third round, in which she lost to Petra Martić . After she reached the semifinals at a tournament of the WTA Challenger Series in Dalian , Dijas celebrated a week later in Tokyo as a qualifier after a final victory over Miyu Katō, her first title at a WTA tournament, which brought her back to the top 100 in the world.
Her best result in 2018 was when she reached the round of 16 in Miami , where she had to give up against Karolína Plíšková . Due to a knee injury that she sustained at the WTA tournament in Nottingham , she was unable to start at Wimbledon . In 2019 Dijas changed her tournament calendar and again played more tournaments on the ITF tour, where she was able to win another title in Gifu ; On the other hand, on the WTA tour, she only managed one quarter-finals in Washington . Nevertheless, she finished the 2019 season for the third time in a row in the top 100 in the world. The start of 2020 got off to a promising start for Dijas, who won an ITF tournament in Hong Kong and reached the third round at the Australian Open after a five-year break, in which she lost to Kiki Bertens .
In 2009 Dijas made her debut in the Kazakh Fed Cup team . Since then she has played 26 singles and doubles games for her country, of which she was able to win 18 (individual balance 14: 5).
