The Stammheim Castle in Stammheim , a district of Florstadt in the Wetterau district in Hesse, is an early modern palace complex that probably emerged from an earlier moated castle .

history

The castle is located on the site of an earlier moated castle owned by the Lords of Düdelsheim , the exact age of which is unknown. When the complex was first documented in the 15th century, it was in the possession of the Lords of Rosenbach , a noble family that is also documented in the neighboring Lindheim Castle near Altenstadt under the local heirs . The gentlemen von Rosenbach often held clerical offices and were in the service of Mainz or Würzburg .

Dietrich von Rosenbach began to build a small castle in place of the castle in 1587. He did not live to see the completion in 1592, as noted in the portal, as he died in 1590. Because of property disputes, the Lords of Rosenbach sold their property in 1699 to the Lords of Schlitz called von Görtz . After various changes of ownership, the community bought the castle in 1850 and set up classrooms and a council chamber in it. Later it was inhabited and neglected by refugees. A few years ago, Stammheim Castle was acquired by a private individual and renovated in an exemplary manner.

investment

The older moated castle can still be recognized by the heavily leveled moat . The castle is a three-storey stone building with a gable roof . On the southwest side is the central projecting entrance with portal . Above it are two coats of arms with the heading DIEZ ROSENBACH and WALBURGI (S) VON KARSBACH and the year 1592. The building still has a slightly defensive character in the style of the time: the basement has loopholes and at the rear there is a round stair tower in the middle . As the facility is privately owned and inhabited, it cannot be visited.
