Haringstein Castle

The Schlossfelsen even Ebinger Castle Rock called, is the residue of a Spur castle on the castle rock above the valley of the Schmiecha about 1000 meters northeast of the district Ebingen the city Albstadt in Zollernalbkreis in Baden-Wuerttemberg .

Geographical location

The former Häringstein Castle is located on a hill northeast of Ebingen, opposite the Ochsenberg and the Malesfelsen at an altitude of 953 meters on the Schlossfels. Today's observation tower offers a beautiful view of the valley and, in good weather, even of the Swiss Alps.

history

The castle was built around 1100 by the Lords of Ebingen or the Lords of Häringstein and was abandoned in the first half of the 13th century.

The former castle , today owned by the city of Albstadt, had a kidney-shaped core castle measuring 17 by 28 meters and a double wall- ditch system on the eastern slope.

The name "Häringstein" (Heringstein) comes from a piece of land at the foot of the castle rock, which can be traced back by name to the noble family of those von Haeringstein.

After archaeological excavations in 1881, a 24-meter-high observation tower was built at the former location of Häringstein Castle in 1899, which still towers over the Ebingen district and is a landmark of Ebingen. The vantage point can be reached via a footpath from the Waldheim Ebingen leisure area. The so-called witch's kitchen, a cave, is located directly under the castle rock tower . In 1960/61 the tower was redesigned by the city of Ebingen. 1991–1993 the tower was completely renovated and newly plastered. The upper viewing platform is at a height of 972 m above sea level. NN, the lower ring is 960.22 m above sea level. NN.
