Schoibern is a small village in the Salzkammergut in Upper Austria as well as the village of the municipality Oberhofen am Irrsee in District Vöcklabruck .

The place is located about 25 kilometers west of Vöcklabruck , 8 kilometers southeast of Straßwalchen and just as far north of Mondsee .

The rotting Schoibern is high above the Irrsee on Schoibernberg  ( 883  m above sea level. A. ) at the 760- 790  m above sea level. A. Höhe, on the south-western slope of the ridge to Gommersberg ( 806  m above sea level ) towards the lake, above the Haslau , a widening on the upper Vöckla . It is 3½ kilometers to the northwest as the crow flies to Oberhofen , the capital of the municipality , and southwest to Zell am Moos as well.

The village of Schoibern comprises only 7 buildings with about 25 inhabitants, 4 of which form the village of Schoibern itself, the others are the scattered houses of Schneiding on Gommersberg and below.

The place can be reached via a rural access road via Schneiding from Obernberg or from Haslau.

Geology and history

On the back near Schoibern there is a marginal moraine of the lobe of the Dachstein glacier that furrows the Mondseeland ("Mondseegletscher" or "Irrseegletscher"). It belongs to the Riss Ice Age (around 200,000 years ago), the highest glaciation in the Alps. The Stoiberberg and its neighboring mountains were nunataks at that time , rock islands protruding from the ice mass. The glacial sediments run down into the Haslau, opposite at Haslau-Berg and Gollau are the simultaneous moraines of the Haslauer side tongue of the Riß glacier.

Schoibern is already listed on a map in 1787, the farmstead on Gommersberg can be found in 1787 as Gundrichberg (?), Around 1830 Gundersberg , 1857 as Guntrichsberg , the Gommersberg itself in 1787 as Fuherlingberg (?).

The small town once got the attention of the public: In the winter of 1906/07, “large parts of the world sank and slipped as a result of the amounts of snow, a house was close to collapsing and several buildings were in danger.” The issue of disaster relief was even discussed in the Reichsrat in June 1907 negotiated.
