Makarow ( Russian Мака́ров ) is a small town in Sakhalin Oblast ( Russia ) with 6,705 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located on the east coast of the Sakhalin Island , about 230 km north of the Oblast capital Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk , near the mouth of the Makarowka River in the Terpenije Bay of the Sea of Okhotsk .

The city of Makarov is the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

Makarov is located on the narrow-gauge (1076 mm) main railway line leading from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to the northern part of the island, to Nogliki .

history

In 1892 the village of Seljutora was founded on the site of today's town . From 1905 it belonged to Japan according to the Treaty of Portsmouth under the name Shiritoru (from Ainu shiri for good , great and turu for earth , soil ) . In 1945 the place came back to the Soviet Union and in 1946 received city ​​rights as Makarow (after the Russian admiral and oceanographer Stepan Makarow ).

Culture and sights

Various buildings from the time the city belonged to Japan have been preserved in Makarov. The mountainous hinterland of the city with various sights such as the mountain range Schdanko with solidified lava flows and a 40 meter high waterfall serves as a recreation area.

economy

During the Soviet Union there was a timber industry and lignite mining in Makarov . Their operations ceased in the 1990s, which led to a significant population decline. Livestock farming is practiced in the area.
