Josef Lenz

Josef "Sepp" Lenz (born February 8, 1935 in Königssee ) is a former German luge athlete and trainer.

He achieved his greatest success as an active player in 1962 when he won the European title in the single seater. After his career he became a coach (later national coach) and is considered the discoverer and supporter of Georg Hackl . Under his direction, German luge athletes won almost 100 medals at the Olympic Games, World and European Championships. In an accident on the Winterberg toboggan run, Lenz's lower leg of his left leg was severed below the knee in December 1993 when he was caught by the American tobogganist Bethany Calcaterra while cleaning the run .
