The Seychelles Football Federation is the football association of the island republic of the Seychelles . You are subordinate to the national championship operation (Seychelles League as the highest class) and the national team. The association was founded in 1979 and has been a member of FIFA and CAF since 1986 .

Soccer in the Seychelles

Football was brought to the Seychelles from Europe in the 1930s. Although there was no organized game operation, football soon became a popular sport. The first "international" games were played in Gordon Square (now Freedom Square) in Victoria, the capital of the Seychelles, between local teams and ship crews. In 1936 a cup competition was played for the first time, which gave football an unexpected boost. A championship was organized and by 1955 9 teams participated. With the arrival of the Englishman Adrian Fisher, football took a fresh turn. With him as coach, a national team was formed that took part in a tournament in Kenya . In the same year, the football association was officially founded, which in 1986 joined FIFA and the CAF (Confederation of African Football / Confédération Africaine de Football). But there was already a forerunner (Seychelles Football Association), which operated the national championship since 1941. The championship is played in three divisions and a central league of 10 teams each.

The current president of the association, Suketu Patel, holds important positions at both FIFA and CAF, such as a member of the FIFA Committee for the U17 World Cup, at CAF he is chairman of the finance committee and vice-chairman of the committee for women's football.

National team

The national team took part in qualifying for the Africa Cup for the first time in 1986 , but has not yet qualified. The Seychelles also failed in qualifying for the World Cup tournaments in 2002, 2006 and 2010. In the FIFA rankings, the Seychelles national team ranks 185th. The national team made headlines in December 2010 when it was revealed that the national coach signed in September 2010 was not, as assumed, the former professional footballer Andy Morrison , but his namesake "Andy" Amers-Morrison .

Women's soccer

Women's football has been played in the Seychelles since 1966 when a women's team competed against an old men's team. Women's football is well organized because there is a league (5 teams) and various tournaments. The association also pays its own trainer to promote women's football.
