Siegfried Rasp (born January 10, 1898 in Munich , † September 2, 1968 in Murnau am Staffelsee ) was a German infantry general in World War II .

Life

Rasp joined the Bavarian Army on September 6, 1915 as a flag junior during the First World War . On October 1, 1916, he was promoted to lieutenant in the 1st Infantry Regiment "König" and from January 1917 served as an adjutant battalion . Until the end of the war, which Rasp experienced as a regimental adjutant, he was awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , the Military Merit Order IV Class with Swords and the Wound Badge in black.

In 1919 he was accepted into the provisional Reichswehr and served in the Reichswehr-Schützen-Regiment 41, later in the 19th (Bavarian) Infantry Regiment . From 1925 he served as first lieutenant and battalion adjutant. From October 1927, Rasp completed his assistant training in the staff of the 5th Division in Stuttgart and the 7th (Bavarian) Division in Munich. From September 1930 Rasp served in the 5th intelligence department and from 1932 as a company commander in the 4th (Saxon) intelligence department, where he was promoted to captain . In 1934 he was transferred to Berlin , where he worked as a tactics teacher at the War Academy . As a major , Rasp was transferred to the staff of the Munich VII Army Corps in 1937 , later he served as Second General Staff Officer (Ib) in the staff of the Breslau VIII Army Corps , as well as in the newly formed Nuremberg XIII. With this division, Rasp took part in the attack on Poland in 1939 . After graduation, he was temporarily employed in the General Staff of the 1st Army and was again active in training from January 1940, this time in the Dresden General Staff course. Shortly before the armistice with France, he was appointed Ia of the 7th Army in the West, where he then worked until May 1942 and was appointed Colonel i. G. was promoted.

His next assignment was that of the Chief of the General Staff of the XXIII deployed on the Eastern Front in Army Group Center . Army Corps . In August 1943 he took over the leadership of the 3rd Mountain Division for a short time and then the 335th Infantry Division (both divisions were deployed in the Ukraine at that time ). Rasp's promotion to major general followed on November 1 . As commander of the 335th Infantry Division, Rasp was awarded the German Cross in Gold on January 27 , 1944 and the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on April 15, 1944 , and was promoted to Lieutenant General in May 1944 .

After his temporary transfer to the Führerreserve , Rasp became commander of the newly formed 78th Grenadier Division in July 1944 . From September to December 1944 he served as Chief of the North Coast Staff and as such was promoted to General of the Infantry on December 1, 1944. As the successor to Friedrich Wiese , Rasp took over the leadership of the 19th Army in Alsace a little later , which he held until mid-February 1945. At the beginning of April 1945 he became the commanding general of the newly formed "Ems" corps (previously XXXI Army Corps), which he remained until the surrender .

During his captivity , which lasted until February 1948, Rasp served as a commander in the Munster POW camp.
