August 19, 2008 , 10:50 p.m.
The favorites for this competition were primarily the reigning world champion and silver medalist from 2004 Bernard Lagat from the United States, the vice world champion and world champion from 2005 Rashid Ramzi from Bahrain, the French European champion Mehdi Baala and the Kenyan world championship fourth from 2007 Asbel Kiprop. The Spaniards Arturo Casado, seventh at the last world championships, and Juan Carlos Higuero, third in the 2006 European Championship , were also trusted to fight for a good position.
But everything turned out a little differently. Lagat and Casado were eliminated in the semi-finals, while Ramzi was now the clear favorite. The Bahraini then crossed the finish line as the winner with a time of 3: 32.94 min. At the end of April 2009, during follow-up checks on the Beijing doping samples, it was found that Ramzi had taken the blood doping drug CERA - an abbreviation for "Continuous Erythropoiesis Receptor Activator", an erythropoietin derivative. Thus, he was removed from the list of winners by the IOC . His gold medal was revoked . Ramzi would have been Bahrain's first Olympic and medalist. Ramzi's deceitful behavior also prevented Brazilian Hudson de Souza from qualifying for the semi-finals and Bernard Lagat not qualifying for the final. Without Ramzi's consideration, they would have advanced into the named rounds due to their times. The ranking in the final could be changed when Ramzi's doping fraud came out, but de Souza's and Lagat's elimination was irreparable.
Two Bahraini and two Kenyans as well as one runner each from France, Great Britain, Italy, Qatar, Morocco, New Zealand, Spain and South Africa qualified for the final. Without Ramzi's fraud, it would only have been a Bahraini while an American would have come along.
The 1500 meter final wasn't a slow race at first. The first four hundred meters were covered in 56.48 s with Kiprop in the lead ahead of Belal Mansoor Ali from Bahrain and the densely packed field. The speed was reduced on the second lap, and the runners needed just under a minute for the second four hundred meters. The field remained close together with the Kenyan Augustine Kiprono Choge in the leading position, who was also in front after the third lap - 57.61 s. Mansour Ali was second, the later disqualified Ramzi third. It only got really fast shortly before the target curve. With Ramzi in the lead, the field was now expanding. Kiprop was second ahead of Mansour Ali, who fell back significantly in the last hundred meters. Ramzi and Kiprop were in the front, behind them a large gap opened up, the South African Juan van Deventer and Choge were in the next places. As it turned out later, Asbel Kiprop ran to the Olympic victory in the front. Behind him everything was whirled around for the last hundred meters. With a strong finish, New Zealander Nick Willis and Baala fought their way to the medal ranks. Nick Willis won silver just ahead of Mehdi Baala. Juan Carlos Higuero finished fourth, ahead of the Moroccan Abdalaati Iguider and Juan van Deventer.
The time for the last lap was extremely fast at 53.5 s, so that for the Olympic champion Asbel Kiprop there was an end time of 3: 33.11 min, just a little more than a second above Noah Ngeny's Olympic record from 2000 lay.
