Mohammed Othman Shaween ( Arabic محمد عثمان شاوين, DMG Muḥammad ʿUṯmān Šāwīn ; * February 15, 1986 in Jeddah ) is a Saudi middle-distance runner who specializes in the 1,500-meter run .

Athletic career

Mohammed Shaween gained his first international experience in 2005 when he finished eighth in the 800 meter run at the Asian Championships in Daegu, South Korea, with a time of 1: 51.19 minutes. He then took part in the West Asian Games in Doha , where he finished fourth over 800 meters in 1: 49.09 min, and also in the 1500-meter run in 3: 44.15 min . The following year he took part in the Asian Games in Doha for the first time and finished sixth over 1500 meters in 3: 42.92 minutes. In 2007 he won the Asian Championships in 3: 46.85 minutes over 1500 meters and in 3: 05.96 minutes with the Saudi 4-by-400-meter relay. Before that, he finished fifth over 800 meters in 1: 48.5 minutes at the Arab Championships there. He then reached the semi-finals at the World Championships in Osaka over 1500 meters and was eliminated there with 3: 44.54 min and then reached sixth place at the Military World Games in Hyderabad with 3: 4.91 min. He also won the silver medal behind the Sudanese Abubaker Kaki at the Pan-Arab Games in Cairo with 3: 48.97 minutes . In 2008 he qualified for the first time for the Olympic Games in Beijing , but retired there over 1500 meters with 3: 45.82 minutes in the first round .

In 2009 he took part in the Summer Universiade in Belgrade and reached the 1500 meter final, in which he was unable to finish his race. He then failed at the World Championships in Berlin with 3: 49.03 minutes in the first round. In November he successfully defended his title in the individual competition at the Asian Championships in Guangzhou with 3: 46.08 min and was fourth in the relay with 3: 06.95 min. The following year he won the Asian Games there with a new player record of 3: 36.49 minutes. In 2011 he again took part in the World Military Games and the World Championships and in the following year in the Asian Indoor and Indoor World Championships and the Olympic Games. In 2013, however, he was banned from mid-2011 to 2016 due to irregularities in his biological passport, and all his performances, including the indoor Asian championship title in 2012, were canceled.

After his suspension expired, he took part in the Asian Indoor Championships in Doha in 2016 , where he finished eighth over 1500 meters in 3: 54.25 minutes. The following year he was eliminated from the Asian Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku with 3: 55.95 minutes in advance and then reached seventh place at the Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar in 3: 51.42 minutes. In mid-September he took part in the Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat and won the silver medal behind the Indian Ajay Kumar Saroj in 3: 49.65 minutes . In 2018 he started again at the Asian Games in Jakarta , but could not finish his 1500 meter heat there.

In 2006 Shaween was Saudi champion in the 800 and 1500 meters.
