Siegfriede Weber-Dempe , b. Dempe, formerly: Prater, also Prater-Dempe, (born March 29, 1914 in Weimar , German Empire ; † January 12, 2011 ibid) was a German athlete who was successful in the sprint and especially in the 80-meter hurdles .

Dempe-Weber was a teacher in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and was involved in sports. She had been a member of the CDU since 1946 .

career path

At the University of Jena Dempe took up a degree in philology in 1933 and took, among other things, physical exercise . After 1945 she was a sports teacher at the Carl Zeiss Jena vocational school . For many years she worked as a sports teacher in vocational schools in Jena and Weimar, took care of the training of young athletes in school and in extracurricular sports and was also successful as a trainer . This is how she discovered Manfred Matuschewski's talent .

Athletic career

In 1931 Dempe became a member of the Weimar Gymnastics Association and had her first sporting success there. She only started running the hurdles in Jena. During athletics training, she was noticed by the “assistant” Oskar Brunken (two-time German sling ball master in 1932 and 1933 ), who advised her to run hurdles .

As a "sports student" Dempe was able to represent the university at German university championships and academic world games in athletics from 1933 to 1939 .

Her favorite discipline was the hurdles. Apart from the hurdles she achieved many good results and championship titles in the 100 and 200 meters as well as in the 4 x 100 meter relay .

In 1935 she was over the hurdles German student champion and student runner-up world champion in Budapest , but missed the qualification for the 1936 Olympic Games , as she only came 4th in the qualifying matches due to injury.

In 1937 she became student world champion in Paris and German champion over 80 meter hurdles in Berlin .

In 1939 she won both a student runner-up in the world championship (100 m) and two world championships (80 m hurdles) and (4 × 100 m) in Vienna . In addition, she was German runner-up in the 80 meter hurdles in Berlin . With 11.5 s she set the German record in 1939 and was in second place in the world rankings.

During the Second World War , she won the title of runner-up over the hurdles in 1941 and 1943 .

After 1945 she started successfully for the Jena University several times

In 1946 Dempe won the championship title over the 200 meters at the east zone parallel event to the west zone championships. In 1947 she won the championship title on the 100 meters in Berlin and defended it on the 200 meters. A little later at the West German Championships in Cologne , she fell so badly that she suffered a hip fracture and had to end the season.

In 1949 she came in third place at the German Championships of the West Zones in Bremen's Weser Stadium over 80 m hurdles and was champion at the East Zone Championships in Jena .

In 1951 Dempe was GDR champion over the 80 meter hurdles .

She was able to achieve a total of ten German or East Zone / GDR championship titles in her career. Weber-Dempe always lived in Weimar, where she was a trainer in university sports until well into the 1980s, but no longer in athletics, but in yoga , and until her 90s you could regularly meet her walking in the Goethepark.

After World War II, Dempe first moved from SC Weimar , which she had joined in 1934, to BSG Carl Zeiss Jena , then to HSG Wissenschaft Jena and then remained active at SC Motor Jena .
