The type 63 is a type of cargo ship from the Sietas shipyard in Hamburg-Neuenfelde , which was manufactured in ten units from 1969 to 1971. No ship of this series has been listed in Lloyd's Register since 2011 .

history

The Arosia in January 1971 in the Kiel Canal

Two Type 63 ships each were originally commissioned by the shipping companies Peter Döhle and Hugo Bartels from Hamburg , Weser Schiffahrtsagentur GmbH & Co. KG from Jevenstedt and ZIM Israel Navigation Company Limited from Haifa . Evelyn Shipping SA from Geneva , which belongs to the Israeli shipping company Aaron Rosenfeld, and the shipowner Horst Werner Janssen from Elsfleth each ordered a ship. After the order was placed, the Swiss company Evelyn Shipping sold its construction contract to Reederei Döhle, which received three units. ZIM Israel Navigation only accepted the Ashdod and sold the construction contract for the second ship Dhalid to the Argo Reederei from Bremen after it was launched . It was delivered from the shipyard with the name Apus .

The three ships managed by Peter Döhle, Arosia , Carolina and Isabella , were initially used for the Swedish Scandinavian Continent Line (SCOL) on trips in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea . The two Bartels ships initially ran as Andrea and Anita for Deutsche Afrika-Linien (DAL) between Europe and West Africa . The other units were mostly used on liner services in / into the Mediterranean . From the late 1970s onwards, the ships were sold and chartered, including in the South Pacific , East Asia and the Caribbean . A special feature is the Süderfehn of the Janssen shipping company, which was registered as Amanda 1 from 1974 to 1976 and again as Anny from 1978 to 1981 under the Austrian flag with its home port of Vienna .

On October 3, 1985, a fire broke out in the crew quarters on board the Odea (formerly Ashdod ) around 320 kilometers south of the Azores island of Pico , and this spread to the engine room. The ship was on the voyage from Georgetown (Guyana) via Great Britain to France. After the fire was extinguished, the Odea was towed first to Ponta Delgada (Azores) and then on to Greenock (Great Britain), where the cargo was recovered. The ship arrived on February 7, 1986 for scrapping in San Esteban de Pravia (Spain). The Intereast (formerly Weser-Dispatcher ) sank on December 19, 1986 in Formosa Street on the journey from Hong Kong (then a British colony) to Taichung (Taiwan) after the cargo, consisting of palm oil barrels and rolls of barbed wire, slipped in heavy seas. Two people were killed in the accident. The Bosowa VI (formerly Isabella ) collided on June 2, 2010 about 33 kilometers (18 nautical miles ) off the north coast of Bali ( Indonesia ) with the coaster Shinpo 18 , which subsequently sank.

The type 63 was an intermediate deck designed for the transport of general cargo with three holds . Up to 178 20-foot containers (TEU) could be stowed on board  . All units of the series had a loading gear at the shipyard , but the number of mounted loading booms and their maximum load capacities were different. Most of the ships had two booms with 35 t each and two more with 15 t each. The Arosia received two booms with 25 t and two with 15 t, the Carolina two with 25 t and two with 12 t and the Ashdod four booms with 20 t each. The Weser brokers were equipped with six loading booms: two with 35 t each and four with 12 t each.

The ships were built in section and had a total length of 105.55 m (91.21 m Lpp , 95.28 m measurement length ). Their width was 15.20 m, the height from the keel to the upper deck 8.30 m and the maximum draft 6.77 m. The two units ordered by ZIM Israel Navigation were measured at 3,287 GRT ( Ashdod ) and 3,292 GRT ( Apus ), respectively , on delivery  , all other ships at 3,250 GRT. The load-bearing capacity of the units varied and was between 4,416  dwt ( Aschdod ) and 4,549 dwt ( Süderfehn ). On behalf of Reederei Döhle, the Carolina was extended from March 17 to April 13, 1973 at Sietas to 116.15 m Lüa (106.65 m Lpp, 108.45 m measurement length) and then as an interchangeable ship with 5,333 dwt and 1,927 GRT measured as a protective decker or with 3,880 GRT as a full decker. In the late summer of 1973, the Döhle shipping company also had the Arosia extended accordingly, which was remeasured with 3,896 GRT, 5,341 dwt and a maximum draft of 6.49 m. In the 1990s, all remaining ships were measured again, most of them with 3,241  GT , the extended Carolina with 3,855 GT and the extended Arosia with 4,012 GT.

All Type 63 units were powered by an eight-cylinder, four-stroke diesel engine that operated on a fixed pitch propeller via a reduction gear . The Ashdod and Apus ships ordered by ZIM Israel Navigation were each fitted with a diesel engine from the manufacturer Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD) with an output of 3,200  hp . The ships Arosia , Carolina and Isabella managed by Peter Döhle each received a 3,500 hp Atlas-MaK 8 MU 551 AK diesel engine, all other units an Atlas-MaK diesel engine with 4,000 hp.
