Sigismund von Schlichting

Wilhelm Lorenz Sigismund von Schlichting (born October 3, 1829 in Berlin , † October 22, 1909 in Herischdorf ) was a Prussian infantry general as well as a military historian and military writer . He is considered to be one of the military theorists of the "operational art" that emerged before the First World War , that is, the theory of the actions of divisions, army corps, armies, army groups and fronts.

Life

origin

His parents were the future general of the infantry Eduard Karl Lorenz von Schlichting (1794–1874) and director of the War Academy in Berlin and his wife Emilie Friederike Sophie Elisabeth, born von Warburg (1803–1887).

Military career

Schlichting visited the cadet houses in Wahlstatt and Berlin and then joined the 7th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army on April 22, 1847 as a portepeef ensign . He did not attend the War Academy , but the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität and the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen . In 1861 Schlichting was promoted to captain . In 1866 he took part in the war against Austria . He was then promoted to major and seconded to the General Staff . In 1870 he led a battalion of the 4th Upper Silesian Infantry Regiment No. 63 in the war against France . With this he took part in the siege of Paris , fought at Chevilly and Villejuif and was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class.

From 1872 to 1874 Schlichting was Chief of Staff of the VII Army Corps , which was stationed in Münster . On September 2, 1873 he was promoted to colonel and on October 27, 1874 appointed commander of the Queen Elisabeth Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 3 . Then Schlichting was from March 12, 1878 Chief of the General Staff of the Guard Corps . On June 1, 1885 Schlichting was appointed commander of the 1st Guard Division . He gave up this command on August 9, 1888 and was then commanding general of the XIV Army Corps in Karlsruhe until 1896 .

Schlichting was on January 2, 1896, leaving à la suite of first Baden Body Guard Grenadiers Regiment. 109 with board for disposition made. He died on October 22, 1909 and was buried three days later, on October 25, in the Zieten Crypt in Bad Warmbrunn .

family

On November 15, 1860, he married Maria Johann Nepomucena Leopoldine Josephine Hedwig Countess von Zieten (February 5, 1838 - July 2, 1923), daughter of Karl Leopold von Zieten (1802–1870) and Ernestine von Schaffgotsch (1805–) in Breslau. 1846). The couple had several children including:

  • Hedwig Marie Fredrike Alexandrine Leopoldine Agnes (born October 29, 1861), superior at the Eppendorf Hospital and founder of the German Sisters' Association
  • Sigismund Wilhelm Lorenz (born June 13, 1863; † 1911), captain, Ottoman officer, murdered in Constantinople ⚭ Ada von Warburg (born July 29, 1865)
  • Emilie Mathilde Agnes Cäzilie Hedwig (born September 4, 1864) ⚭ 1892 Richard von Funck (1841–1906), General of the Infantry
  • Joachim Leopold (born June 13, 1866; † 1952), Lieutenant ⚭ Antonie Leopoldine August von Froben (born December 19, 1874)
