Ludwig Richard Johannes von Funck , since 1892 Freiherr von Funck (born January 8, 1841 in Herzberg (Elster) , † August 9, 1906 in Eisenach ) was a Prussian general of the infantry and general inspector of military education and training .

Richard was a son of the Prussian senior government councilor Ludwig Friedrich von Funck († 1878) and his wife Marie, née Penner.

Military career

Funck attended the grammar school in Torgau and the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . In 1859 he was reciprocated in the Corps Guestphalia Heidelberg . On October 1, 1859, he joined the 20th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as a one-year volunteer . In mid-December 1860 he was transferred to the 7th Brandenburg Infantry Regiment No. 60 in Wriezen while being promoted to Second Lieutenant . With this association , Funck took part in the battles near Windeby , Missunde , the storming of the Düppeler Schanzen and the transition to Alsen in 1864 during the war against Denmark . After the end of the war, he graduated from the War Academy from October 1865 for further training . He had to interrupt this command due to the war against Austria in 1866. After his participation in the Battle of Königgrätz and the conclusion of peace , Funck continued his studies at the War Academy until the end of July 1868. In the meantime he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant , he was then assigned to the Hessian Field Artillery Regiment No. 11 and then to service with the Great General Staff .

For the duration of the mobile relationship on the occasion of the war against France , in 1870/71 he was commanded as a general staff officer in the general government in the district of I. , II. , IX. and Xth Army Corps . From January 24 to April 15, 1871 Funck was assigned to the General Staff of the Great Headquarters . He was then assigned to serve in the 1st Department for Army Affairs A at the War Ministry and in mid-July 1871 was promoted to captain in this command and position à la suite of his regiment . Shortly thereafter, Funck joined the central department at the beginning of October 1884 until further notice and was appointed head of this department in mid-February 1885. As a colonel , Funck was the commander of the 5th Pomeranian Infantry Regiment No. 42 in Stralsund from May 22, 1889 to April 16, 1890 . With promotion to major general , he was then given command of the 55th Infantry Brigade stationed in Karlsruhe . On January 24, 1891, Funck was commanded to represent the director of the military and economic department and on February 9, 1891, he was transferred to the army officers while remaining in this command.

When he was transferred to the War Ministry, Funck was appointed director of the department on March 7, 1891. At the same time, from March 15, 1891, he also worked as a deputy authorized representative in the Federal Council and in the following years also worked several times as an arbitrator during the imperial maneuvers . He advanced to lieutenant general in mid-June 1893 and was transferred to Düsseldorf on March 17, 1894 as commander of the 14th division . On January 27, 1898, Funck was promoted to General of the Infantry and appointed Inspector General of Military Education. In recognition of his services, he received the Grand Cross of the Red Eagle Order with Oak Leaves, the Grand Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown and the Order of the Crown, 1st Class. With the approval of his resignation request, he was put up for disposition on September 11, 1903 under position à la suite of the infantry regiment "Prince Moritz von Anhalt-Dessau" (5th Pomeranian) No. 42 with the statutory pension .

Funck was from February 23, 1898 until his death as chairman of the military society .

On the occasion of his death, Kaiser Wilhelm II decreed that the officers of the infantry regiment "Prince Moritz von Anhalt-Dessau" (5th Pomeranian) No. 42 had to mourn for three days. In addition, a delegation of the regiment, consisting of a commander, a major, a captain and a lieutenant, was ordered to attend the funeral.

family

Funck had married Martha von Holtzendorff (1855-1884) on March 26, 1881 in Gotha . She was a sister of the later Grand Admiral Henning von Holtzendorff . From the marriage, the later senior government councilor Jürgen von Funck (1882–1963) emerged. After the early death of his first wife, Funck married Emy von Schlichting (* 1864) in Karlsruhe on June 11, 1892 . This marriage remained childless.
