Holtzendorff (noble family)
Holtzendorff is the name of an old noble family from the Brandenburg region . They belong to the primeval nobility of the Uckermark . Later branches, some of which still exist today, came to Silesia , East Prussia , Pomerania , Saxony and Mecklenburg .
There is no relationship to the noble von Holtzendorff family of the same name, which was raised to the Prussian nobility in 1767 with a completely different coat of arms and has probably since died out (see below: Personalities) .
A relationship to the Mecklenburg noble family von Holtorff suspected in older literature is genealogically not verifiable.
history
origin
Otto de Holtzendorpe was named in a document on August 11, 1297 as the first representative of the sex . The headquarter that gave the name was Gut Holzendorf, which today belongs to the Falkenhagen district of the municipality of Nordwestuckermark near Prenzlau . From the 14th century onwards, relatives appeared in the Uckermark as castle residents.
Lines and possessions
Heinrich von Holtzendorff, mentioned as early as 1240, probably belonged to the family. He was the castle captain of Stendal and fought with the margrave Otto von Brandenburg against the landgrave Heinrich von Thuringia in the meeting of Mittenwalde .
Saxon Line (Counts of Holtzendorff)
In 1410, Albrecht von Holtzendorff and members of the von Quitzow aristocratic family invaded Saxony, but were taken prisoner with eleven horsemen. It is possible that he then settled permanently in Saxony, because an Albrecht and a Marquard von Holtzendorff appear as members of the Meissen nobility and in 1413 accompanied the Elector of Saxony Rudolph III. to the council in Constance .
However, the lineage of the Saxon line, called the Sydow tribe , from which the later Counts of Holtzendorff originate, begins with Bernhard von Holtzendorff , Herr auf Stolzenhahn. His son Dietrich , Herr auf Sydow , was privy councilor of Kurbrandenburg and head captain of the Altmark around 1480 .
Dietrich von Holzendorf (* 1535, † around 1598), was a confidante of Elector Johann Georg and his inspector for court music; he also composed hymns himself. He was married to Ursula von Lindstedt; In 1577 he became a councilor, in 1584 he was the governor of Biesenthal, and from 1588 he was a councilor. In 1590 he acquired the manor of Cöthen , and in 1592 a share in the neighboring Dannenberg. Presumably he was governor of the Spandau Citadel from 1580 to 1593 . His tomb from the church in Sydow is now in the Berlin City Museum.
His son Anton von Holtzendorff , Herr auf Cöthen (Kötten) and Sydow, married Ottilie von Wenkstern . From the marriage came Stellanus († 1605), who immigrated from the march to Saxony and became the progenitor of the Saxon branch. Stellanus was chamberlain to Elector August von Sachsen and acquired the Dröschkau estate in Wurzen Abbey . His wife Euphemia († 1604) was born from Haugwitz from the Putzkau family .
The Saxon descendants included Christoph Siegmund († 1715), Herr auf Thallwitz and Culm, who was married to Agnes Christiane von Schönberg († 1696) in his first marriage . Their son, Christian Gottlieb Graf von Holtzendorff (1696–1755), received Bärenstein Castle through marriage with Sophie Freiin von Bibran († 1742) and from 1724 built Oberlichtenau Castle in Upper Lusatia. In 1744 he sold Oberlichtenau to the Saxon Minister, Count Heinrich von Brühl . In 1745 he was made count. His daughter, Countess Friederike Christiane von Holtzendorff, married Count Friedrich August von Cosel , an illegitimate son of Augustus the Strong, with his mistress Constantia von Cosel in 1749 ; she inherited Bärenstein, which passed to one of her daughters in 1795.
Hans von Holtzendorff was the bailiff of the Querfurt office .
Uckermärkische line (from Holtzendorf)
The von Holtzendorf counted in the state description of the Mark Brandenburg from 1373 to the castle-seated nobility . In the land book of Emperor Charles IV of 1375, the family sat on Gut Jagow (today part of Uckerland ); they founded the Jagow tribe of the same name , which stayed there until 1945. In 1413 they owned Köpenick as pledge and Strausberg near Berlin . In Barnim , the Holtzendorff owned Beiersdorf , Falkenberg, Schönfeld , Sydow and Tuchen from 1441 . From 1473 they also owned Libbesicke and Vietmannsdorf near Templin . In Pomerania the family owned in 1455 zu Stolzenberg in the former district of Randow and in 1479 zu Spantekow bei Anklam .
In the 16th century Kolbitzow , Boblin , Liebenow and Schönwerder, in the 17th century Torgelow , in the 18th century Forstenwalde, Pinnow , Schönwalde and Voigtshagen and at the beginning of the 19th century Heinrichsdorf in the Greifenhagen district were owned by the family. From 1560 Teichenau near Schweidnitz and from 1774 Nesselwitz and Wirschkowitz near Militsch belonged to the Silesian possessions . In the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin , the family had been in the Stavenhagen office since 1713 and still in Liepen in 1780 and in 1734 in Gerlauken in the Fischhausen district in East Prussia , in 1762 in Auer in the Mohrungen district and later also in Galitten, Ranglack, Trimnau, Galben and Szimkowo.
