Georg Ernst Holtzendorff , von Holtzendorff from 1767 , (born February 14, 1714 in Calbe ; † December 10, 1785 in Berlin ) was a Prussian officer , most recently major general and inspector general of the artillery and artillery schools.

Life

Georg Ernst was the son of the surgeon general of the Prussian army and personal surgeon of King Ernst Konrad Holtzendorff and his wife Barbara Cecillie, née von Senneville († 1727).

Holtzendorff attended the Joachimsthal School from 1723 to 1730 . Although his father intended to be a doctor, he joined the field artillery corps in 1730 as a bombardier. On November 19, 1741 he became second lieutenant and in 1746 premier lieutenant . In 1747 he went to the Freikorp von Sachsen and fought for the French under the Marshal of Saxony in the Netherlands. On his return he wrote a detailed report for the king.

In 1755 he became a staff captain in the 1st Battalion. He was promoted to captain and appointed company commander on June 20, 1758 . For his services, Holtzendorff was raised to the hereditary Prussian nobility on January 21, 1767 . As a lieutenant colonel , he was then given command of the 1st artillery regiment on March 4, 1770

In 1771 he became a colonel . In 1779 he was promoted from the king to major general, chief and inspector general of the entire artillery and their magazines. In addition, the artillery schools (École d'Artillerie) were subordinate to him.

During his long service Holtzendorff was involved in twelve battles: 1741 Mollwitz , 1745 Hohenfriedberg , 1745 Soor , 1747 in Laffeld in Brabant, 1758 Zorndorf , 1758 Hochkirch , 1760 Liegnitz , Brukerdorf and the bombardment of Neisse as well as nine sieges: Brieg , Neisse, Prague (twice), Bergen-op-Zoom , Olmütz , Dresden , Schweidnitz .

In 1756 he acquired the order Pour le Mérite in the Battle of Lobositz and was wounded on the left loin in the Battle of Leuthen in 1757 .

Holtzendorff was married to Louise Dorothea, née Roeber (1727–1779). The couple had four children:

  • Georg Friedrich (1754–1793), Prussian staff captain of the artillery ∞ Rudolphine Wilhelmine von Lütke (daughter Rosalie married the later Minister of War and General of the Infantry Gustav von Rauch in 1816 )
  • Marie Henriette (1755–1757)
  • Karl Friedrich (1764–1828), Prussian Lieutenant General, Knight of the Pour le Merite and Inspector General of Military Education Charlotte Leopoldine Wilhelmine von Boyen (1769–1848)
