The Silkeroder Hügelland is a landscape south of the Harz Mountains in the districts of Eichsfeld and Nordhausen in northern Thuringia and Göttingen in south-eastern Lower Saxony .

geography

location

The hilly landscape is the south-eastern continuation of the Rotenberg in the southern Harz region. It lies clockwise between Weißenborn-Lüderode in the south, Zwinge in the west, the Rotenberg in the north-west, Bartolfelde and Osterhagen in the north and Limlingerode and Stöckey in the east. Central places are the eponymous Silkerode as well as Bockelnhagen and Weilrode . Although the greater part of the area is in the Eichsfeld district , the majority does not belong to the historical Eichsfeld . The former inner-German border ran over the western and northern edge of the Silkeroder hill country .

Natural allocation

The Silkeroder Hügelland belongs as a south-eastern continuation of the Rotenberg (374.5) to the main unit Eichsfelder Becken (374) of the main group unit Weser-Leine-Bergland (37) and bears the code number 374.51.

Neighboring natural areas are in the north the Zechstein areas of the south-western Harz foothills and the southern Harz Zechstein belt , in the south-east the northern Thuringian hill country , in the south-west the Ohm Mountains and the Hell Mountains and in the north-west the Rotenberg .

The Thuringian State Institute for Environment and Geology uses its own somewhat coarser structure that only exists nationwide, within which the red sandstone area in Thuringia is part of the North Thuringian red sandstone region .

mountains

The mountains and elevations include in terms of height:

  • Dog Mountain (377.6 m), district of Göttingen, south of Bartolfelde
  • nameless mountain (361.4 m), district of Göttingen, south of Barbis
  • Kuhtalsberg (342.0 m), Eichsfeld district, east of Weilrode
  • Schöneichelkopf (341.1 m), Eichsfeld district, east of Weilrode
  • nameless mountain (346.2 m), Eichsfeld district, northwest of Weißenborn-Lüderode ("White Stone")
  • Upper Scherenberg (325.6 m), Eichsfeld district, south of Bockelnhagen
  • Großer Bornberg (324.8 m), border area between the districts of Göttingen and Eichsfeld, north of Silkerode
  • Kirchberg (323.1 m), Eichsfeld district, south of Weilrode
  • Kämmerchenkopf (321.7 m), Eichsfeld district, northeast of Bockelnhagen
  • Buchenberg (320.2 m), Nordhausen district, north of Stöckey

Waters

The Silkeroder hill country forms part of the Elbe-Weser watershed between the Harz and Eichsfeld and belongs to the geological formation of the Eichsfeld threshold . The following source areas are located here:

nature

The heavily structured hilly landscape (also known as the "humpbacked world") is predominantly used for agriculture in the southwest, while forests characterize the landscape in the northeast. In the border area of Thuringia and Lower Saxony there are 2 nature reserves in the Mackenröder forest ( Sülzensee - Mackenröder forest and Steingrabental - Mackenröder forest ).

Geologically, the subsoil consists of lower red sandstone . At the southern transition area there are witness mountains made of shell limestone ( Iberg , Allerberg ) as part of the northern Ohmgebirge rift zone . On the northern edge at the transition to the Zechstein areas, karst phenomena occur more frequently.

The area is part of the major nature conservation project Eichsfeld-Werratal.

Tourism

Numerous hiking trails open up the landscape and sights:
