Career

Simon Després began his career with Rousseau Sports de Laval-Bourassa in the Québec Midget Hockey League , a regional junior league. In the 2007 entry draft of the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ), the player was selected in first overall position by the Saint John Sea Dogs . The defensive player then moved to the Canadian Major Junior League and was elected to the LHJMQ All- Rookie Team at the end of his debut season .

In the NHL Entry Draft 2009 Després was selected in the first round in a total of 30th position by the Pittsburgh Penguins . On October 7, 2009, he signed an entry-level contract with the Penguins. The defender then completed two more seasons in the Québec Major Junior Hockey League. In the play-offs of the 2010/11 season , the Sea Dogs reached the final as in the previous year . There they prevailed against the Gatineau Olympiques and won the Coupe du Président for the first time . Després was subsequently elected to the LHJMQ First All-Star team; in addition, he was awarded the Trophée Émile Bouchard as the best defender in the league . Through the LHJMQ championship, the Saint John Sea Dogs also won a participation in the 2011 Memorial Cup . In this tournament, the Sea Dogs prevailed in the final against the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors from the Ontario Hockey League and won their first Memorial Cup .

In the following season, Simon Després finally made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Pittsburgh Penguins. The defensive player completed 18 games for the Penguins in the 2011/12 NHL season , scoring one goal and three assists. The left-shooter spent most of the season with Pittsburgh's farm team Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins in the American Hockey League (AHL).

In March 2015, the Penguins gave it to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Ben Lovejoy . For the Ducks, he graduated in the season 2016/17 due to a concussion just one competitive match before the team in June 2017 paid him his remaining three years of the contract (buy-out) , so that it from now on as a free agent was looking for a new employer and found it in August 2017 in HC Slovan Bratislava from the Continental Hockey League .

In the fall of 2018, he took part in the Montreal Canadiens training camp , but only received an offer for an AHL contract, which he did not accept. Nevertheless, in December he played five games for the Rocket de Laval , the Canadiens' farm team in the AHL, as part of a trial contract , before joining the Kölner Haien from the German Ice Hockey League in February 2019 . There he initially signed a contract until the end of the 2018/19 season.
