In 2009, it is estimated that around 23.9 million guests visited Six Flags' parks. This made Six Flags the fourth largest amusement park chain worldwide in terms of visitor numbers. The Six Flags spectrum includes theme parks, water parks and animal parks . In New Jersey , Six Flags operates the highest roller coaster in the world (see Kingda Ka ).
history
Six Flags was founded in the US state of Texas . In 1961, Six Flags Over Texas opened the chain's first park. The park's name refers to the six nations that Texas has belonged to throughout history, and whose flags waved over the state. From the name of the park, the chain took the first part as its name. Three years later, in 1964, the Pennsylvania Company bought the park. In 1967, Six Flags Over Georgia opened its second park.
In the 1980s, Wesray Capital Corporation , which was controlling Six Flags at the time , tried to get the company into the film business. In 1984 there was a license agreement with Warner Bros. In 1987 Wesray acquired the RKO legal successor RKO Pictures Inc. and merged it with Six Flags to form a new company - RKO / Six Flags Entertainment Inc. The project failed and RKO was sold again in 1989.
In 1998, Premier Parks took over 100% of Six Flags Corporation for about $ 1.9 billion and decided to bring its own parks under the Six Flags flag. Premier Parks took over the Walibi Group with the parks Aquitaine, Bellewaerde , Rhone-Alpes , Lorraine, Wavre, and Flevo. In 1999, Premier Parks took over Warner Bros. Movie World in Bottrop .
In 2000 Premier Parks became Six Flags Inc. The Walibi Group became the Six Flags European Division together with Movie World Bottrop and Walibi Flevo was renamed Six Flags Holland. In 2001, Walibi Wavre became Six Flags Belgium. A year later, in 2002, Warner Bros. Movie World Madrid opened.
In 2004, Six Flags Worlds of Adventure was sold to Cedar Fair and was now called Geauga Lake . Six Flags Inc. sold its European division to the British investment company Palamon, which continues to operate the parks under the name StarParks . The shares in Movie World Madrid were sold to Time Warner and the 100-year management contract was canceled. For their own parks, contracts have been concluded with DC Comics and Warner Bros., which guarantee Six Flags the exclusive right to use the themes and characters in theme parks. Six Flags Inc. securities are traded on various trading venues under ISIN US83001P1093. Until February 2003, the fictional person Mr. Six was part of an advertising campaign for the park.
After the company had run into high debts since 1998 and the share price fell below the required minimum in October 2008 as a result of the financial crisis , the Chapter 11 bankruptcy was decided on June 13, 2009 . However, it was reported that there will be no layoffs or park closings. After restructuring the company, it was possible to leave the bankruptcy protection behind on May 3, 2010. In 2010, the company's headquarters moved from New York City to Grand Prairie.
