The Société Internationale de Sauvetage du Léman ( SISL ) (German about: International Society for Rescue on Lake Geneva ) is a Swiss-French association for water rescue on Lake Geneva (French Lac Léman ). The non-profit organization has around 2200 members, around 40% of whom are also actively involved in rescue or training. The organization, founded in 1885, operates rescue stations around the lake, on which around 19,000 ships are permitted, in order to be able to help as quickly as possible in an emergency . The rescue units are on alert at all times. The alarm is sent via the emergency call centers or via channel 16 during the season .

The SISL consists of 34 sections around the lake, 26 in Switzerland and 8 in France. The head office of the association is in Clarens .

history

Even before the SISL was founded, there were local rescue teams on Lake Geneva. In 1861 the visionary Jean-Jacques Mercier initiated the establishment of a rescue team in Ouchy near Lausanne, together with the expansion of the port and his new Hotel Beau-Rivage . In 1863 a water rescue association was founded for residents of Vevey and La Tour-de-Peilz . The municipality of La Tour-de-Peilz donated 25 francs to build a lifeboat. In 1874 it was divided into two independent companies and Tour-de-Peilz was able to afford a new rowing boat for 8 men thanks to donations. The committed rescuers in Vevey also received support from the public sector by guaranteeing them CHF 1 and CHF 50 per man each time they were called to work.

The first rescue organization was founded in Geneva in 1880 by Joseph Mégemond. Mégemond was a captain on Lake Geneva and also an excellent swimmer who was known to be a lifesaver. For unclear reasons - Mégemont may not have been a good organizer - his organization did not get the job done properly. It was only after twelve people drowned in a collision between two Lake Geneva ships that Mégemont was able to convince William Huber-Saladin to help him revive his rescue company.

In 1885 the SISL was founded by the Swiss Colonel William Huber-Saladin from Geneva. The first meeting took place on June 21, 1885 in Nyon . He took the French Société Nationale de Sauvetage en Mer as a model. Initially the company was under a bad star, because the existing sections of Vevey and La Tour did not want to be integrated into a company controlled by Geneva and considered the new organization superfluous. In contrast, there was great support from Paris: The president there assured the new organization that it would deliver rescue equipment (including line throwing devices ). On September 6, 1885, the organization gave itself the first statutes at another meeting in Thonon-les-Bains . These assemblies formed the basis for the cross-border merger. As a result, the first six sections were founded, but they still had to be formed and equipped.

The start was accordingly resinous. Mégemond died the following year, and many members were not fully prepared to use large parts of their free time as well as considerable membership fees to rescue third parties. At that time in Geneva it cost between 5 and 15 francs to join the society and 1 franc per month to continue to belong to it - at that time quite considerable sums. Through skilful negotiations and new appointments to important management positions in the sections, the sections are maintained and their number increases. Huber-Saladin continues to reach out to rich and influential people like Ami Chessex with his concerns. He is also always available for original ideas to entertain the members.

At the general assembly of 1888 a rowing race took place for the first time. The boats are supposed to take two “castaways” on board and cover a distance of 1.2 km. Four groups take part. The event is such a great public success that it is to be repeated regularly from now on. However, this presents the Central Committee with new challenges, because now clear rules for the races and the boats must be agreed, which will drag on for several years.

The individual sections used rowing lifeboats for their missions. These were gradually replaced by motor boats in the 20th century , or at least the existing boats were motorized. In 1957 rowing boats were partly manned for missions.

organization

Each of the 34 sections of the SISL is an independent association. The clubs organize themselves autonomously, both in terms of their budget and their boats and equipment. That is why the lifeboat fleet on Lake Geneva is not uniform. Each section has at least one lifeboat, equipped with blue lights and sometimes sirens . In addition, each section has a rowboat , but these are no longer used for rescue, but serve folkloric purposes or for physical exercise.

While some sections can benefit from contributions from the respective communities or regions, others are completely dependent on donations.

The rescuers of the SISL regularly practice for their missions, also together with the fire brigade and police , on the Swiss and French sides. Major exercises take place at least every two years and employ units from the police, SISL, fire brigade and border guards .
