Somerville was organized as a town on March 25, 1858. Previously the area was known as the Patricktown Plantation . This had existed since 1813. On April 17, 1937, at the height of the Great Depression , the organization as Town was abolished and Somerville was organized as Somerville Plantation . The reorganization as a town took place on February 6, 1974.
