action

In 1937 the warlock Warwick seeks to prove to the town of Fernfield how powerful he is. To do this, he has kidnapped five beagle puppies that he wants to sacrifice to the evil hellhound. The portal to the underworld only opens on Halloween, when it receives the souls of five puppies of the same blood. Pip, one of the pups, belongs to Joseph, who, along with his father and other brave men in town, set out to storm the mansion and get his pup back. Since the hellhound has already taken the souls of Pip's siblings and turned him to stone himself, the men can no longer save him. While Warwick escapes into the underworld, Pip's ghost lingers, but no one noticed. As a result of what happened, the house was boarded up and no one entered again.

75 years later, the golden retriever puppies Rosebud, Budderball, Mudbud, B-Dawg and Buddha are on a Halloween school trip with their owners Alice, Billy, Pete, Sam and Bartleby. While the children listen to a lecture by the teacher, the buddies explore the house. Legend has it that the word "Hallowuff Dog" should be pronounced three times in front of Warwick's mirror to conjure up the Hellhound. The fearful B-Dawg tries to build self-esteem by doing so. Pip, the ghost pup still wants to warn the buddies, but B-Dawg ends the spell anyway. Fearing Pip, all the buddies run out of the house, back to the class, where Billy, B-Dawg's owner, is being admonished by his teacher that he still hasn't made his history paper. Without further ado, Billy decides to hold it over Warwick the warlock. With the help of Sheriff Dan, Billy borrows documents about the warlock and materials that Warwick left behind during his escape, including his wand and the spell book.

In the evening the children want to go from house to house in disguise to collect sweets on Halloween evening. Since Billy's mother accidentally bought the wrong costume, the boy decides to use the cool wand and dress up as Warwick. Together with his friends and the dogs, who are all dressed up as well, they roam the city on their hunt for "trick or treating". As it gets dark, Warwick and the hellhound can finally leave the mirror. Owl mate Huhu, tell them the staff is in Billy's hands. Warwick immediately goes in search of the boy and scours the streets, where he meets the disguised children everywhere, which confuses him very much. He sends the Hellhound out to find five new pups to end his curse. So Pip's ghost tries to find the buddies to warn them about the hellhound. When they see the ghost, they first run away from it, but let Zelda, a little magic dog, convince them of the benign nature of the ghost. During their escape from the hellhound, the buddies turn to the police dog Sniffer, but this is unceremoniously turned to stone by their pursuer. Zelda leads Pip and the buddies to the cemetery where the stone figure of Pip is. With a magic spell, she manages to give Pip his body back. But the hellhound finds the puppies and now turns Zelda to stone. He captures the buddies and Pip and takes them to the old mansion.

Billy wants to get in touch with the boy from back then to ask questions for his presentation. He meets Warwick and realizes that he is the real sorcerer. Billy can initially incapacitate him using the magic wand, but Warwick does not give up and recruits an assistant. After Warwick manages to get the wand back, he transforms Sheriff Dan and tries to force the children to tell him where the magic book is. They are rescued from this dangerous situation by Joseph Johnston, who owned Pips as a child. He leads the children to church, where they are safe from the magician. Warwick gives them an ultimatum: give him the magic book for their pups. But the hellhound already has his own plans and wants the five siblings as victims immediately. Pip volunteered that he should only take him, because his siblings were already in his power and all he needed was him. The hellhound accepts this and turns Pip back to stone. Immediately the souls of the underworld are set free and leave the mirror, which is the portal there. They turn everyone they meet in the city into zombies. The children manage to outsmart Warwick and take the wand away from him. The buddies in turn manage to outsmart the hellhound so that he turns himself to stone. When Billy reads a spell from the magic book, the evil spirits come back and fly back into the mirror. Warwick himself is pushed in the mirror by Mr. Johnston and disappears. So that he can never come back, he also smashes the wand and the mirror. At this moment, all enchanted people and animals transform back into their form and Pip's siblings are redeemed again. After 75 years, Mr. Johnston is back with Pip and the children are reunited with their buddies. They say goodbye to Mr. Johnston, who has tracked down the owners of Pip's siblings and now wants to travel through America in a trailer to bring back their dogs. The buddies say goodbye to Pip, who thanks them for helping him defeat Warwick and redeem his siblings.

criticism

Kino.de assessed: “Not only do the adventures of action and horror heroes find their sequels in the film world, even small dogs sometimes come back when they need to. The 'Buddies', five lovely retriever puppies from the Disney Factory, have been sled dogs in Alaska and astronauts in space before they also have to deal with evil wizards and grim hellhounds in this good-natured, entertaining scary joke with trick-technical effects reminiscent of 'Casper', the already friendly ghost. Child-friendly. "

Cinema.de , on the other hand, said: “Wrong airtime, wrong holiday. Yelp! "
