Springhill is a city in Webster Parish in the US state of Louisiana . Almost 5300 people live in an area of over 16 square kilometers.

Springhill is part of the Ark-La-Tex socio-economic region , which includes parts of the four states of Arkansas , Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas .

geography

Springhill is located in the northwest of the state of Louisiana in the southern United States, directly on the northern border with Arkansas and about 55 kilometers from the western border with Texas. Lake Murray and Williams Lake with the adjoining Paper Mill Pond border the city in the southwest . Lake Erling in Arkansas is five kilometers northwest of the city .

Nearby cities include Sarepta (8 km south), Taylor (9 km north), Shongaloo (17 km southeast), Bradley (18 km northwest), and Plain Dealing (23 km southwest). The next larger city with around 200,000 inhabitants is Shreveport, 55 kilometers southwest .

history

The first permanent settlement of the area around today's Shonagloo was recorded around 1818 south of the Parish Seat in Minden . In 1894 the present city area was known as Barefoot . It was incorporated in 1902.

economy

As in all places in the region, Springhill's economy was initially shaped by the timber industry. It all started in 1896 when the Pine Woods Lumber Company set up a factory here. Urban growth benefited enormously from this settlement. After the global economic crisis , the company migrated and the population fell sharply. The company's former facilities changed hands several times in the following years. In 1937, the International Paper Company opened a paper mill that boosted wood extraction and allowed the regional economy to grow again. The subsequent establishment of a farm for wood production made Springhill the lumber center of northern Louisiana. In 1979, however, the paper mill was closed; together with the crisis in the oil industry, this also had a negative impact on the economy. Until 2007 the farm was also sold to competitor Georgia-Pacific .

Only the Tucker Lumber Company sawmill remains today .
