St. Dominic Church

The Catholic St. Dominic's Church stands in the Lipschitzallee 74 in Berlin district of Gropiusstadt of Neukölln . It was designed by Hans Skull and Hermann Jünemann as a reinforced concrete skeleton in the architectural style of post-war modernism . The 1975-1977 built church and in 1969 built community center are under monument protection .

history

The impetus to found its own parish in Gropiusstadt came from its Catholic faithful, who made up eleven percent of the population. By 1975, 50,000 people moved to the satellite city from old building areas in the West Berlin city center in 18,500 newly built family-friendly rental apartments . From 1966, the year the congregation was founded, the service was celebrated in the laundry room of an apartment building, on Sundays in the entrance hall of a school, and after the construction of the community center in its service room .

Building description

The building complex is on the square in front of the entrance to the Lipschitzallee underground station . The architects implemented the idea of perfect spatial and liturgical design in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council . Based on this model, the St. Mark's Church in Falkenhagener Feld and the Church of the Holy Martyrs of Africa in Lichtenrade were built in the same year . These churches are also referred to as " St. Melitta " by the Berliners because of the shape of the domes . The middle area of the central building is domed with a truncated cone made of 24 girders , the outer surface of which is clad with aluminum above a circumferential strip of windows and the upper surface of which consists of a skylight . The nave on a square floor plan has a glass wall facing the street, the side windowless walls are unplastered, they are made of red-brown bricks .

The interior is characterized by the dome, below the skylight the altar stands. The pews of the church stalls are arranged in a circle around the altar. The furnishings come from Hubert Elsässer : the altar and baptismal font are made of shell limestone , the ambo and reliquary of the patron saint Dominic are made of bronze . Behind the altar is a free-standing wall with a tabernacle accessible from both sides . The room behind it served as a chapel on the working day .

The organ with two manuals , a pedal and 18 stops was built in 1988 by Klaus Corbach.

The campanile is composed of precast concrete parts , crowned with a stylized cross . In the belfry hangs a bronze bell that was cast by Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock in 1976. It weighs 294 kg, has a diameter of 76 cm and a height of 62 cm, bears the inscription “CONCORDIA ET PAX” and sounds on the strike note c ″.
