St. Nicholas Church

The Evangelical Lutheran St. Nikolai Church is the oldest building in the city of Bad Sachsa . It stands on a small hill in the historic city center . The church belongs to the parish of Harzer Land of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover .

tower

The massive stone masonry of the tower proves that it was a defensive tower , probably from the 12th century. At that time this tower was the service of a knight who was supposed to protect the region from robbers . At some distance from the tower, a small chapel was built, which can still be seen today by the massive stone masonry in the chancel . Both structures were connected to a nave by the side walls around 1300 and covered with a gable roof. The fortified tower, which has been converted into a church tower, has a square floor plan and protrudes from the gable roof of the nave like a roof tower , although it has its own foundation . Below its eaves it has four sound arcades , behind which the belfry is housed. An eight-sided pointed helmet was placed on the tower. Its four dormers in all directions contain the clock faces of the tower clock . A Prussian eagle , which was first installed in 1823, serves as a wind direction indicator on the top of the church tower . He recalls that Bad Sachsa came under the Prussian government again in 1813 after Bad Sachsa was liberated from Napoleon's rule . Napoleon had assigned Bad Sachsa to the Kingdom of Westphalia .

Peal

St. Nikolai has a ring of three cast steel bells , all of which were cast after World War II . They were bought in 1951 after the only bronze bell that survived the war was sold.

Nave

The portal of the hall church is on the south side. The tower hall is entered via an anteroom, from here an arched passage leads into the nave. The floor slopes down towards the altar to compensate for the different levels between the tower hall and the former chapel. In 1691 the city council had an extension built as a half-timbered house on the south side , through which the interior is left.

The galleries were donated in 1680. Their parapets consist of panel paintings on which Bible verses are painted.

In 1725 Johann Georg Hoyer from Nordhausen was commissioned to create a ceiling painting for the barrel vault with a blue sky and light clouds , with Jehovah and two angels in the middle . However, the artist chose not to depict God , but chose the Sanctus in the Lord's Supper service , to which “Holy, holy, holy is God, the Lord of hosts” is sung. He represented God as the Hebrew YHWH in the equilateral triangle as a symbol of the Trinity , surrounded by the words Holy, Holy, Holy.

altar

The altar was donated in 1595 by the then mayor Hartmann. The structure of the wooden altar by an unknown artist is cross-shaped. The predella is made of stucco marble . The altarpiece is designed as a triptych . The left oval panel shows the announcement of the birth of Jesus by the Archangel Gabriel , the right the birth in the stable. The middle panel depicts the Lord's Supper . In the crack above there is a picture of the crucifixion . The top is a panel with the resurrection and ascension of Christ. The paintings are simple in their painting technique . To the side of the altar are choir stalls that were erected at the same time as the pulpit .

pulpit

The pulpit was created in 1711. Her basket is carried by a figure of Moses who holds two tablets of the law . The edge of the sound cover above the pulpit is also decorated with the Prussian emblem , but the top is crowned by a small statue of Christ.

Baptismal frame

In 1887 a baptismal frame was purchased. Stylistically, it is a combination of Gothic pointed arches and Corinthian -style columns . At first it was painted inconspicuously and was hidden behind the altar when it was not in use. Today stands with the strong accent of a colored coat always in front of the altar.

organ

In 1730 an organ with a richly carved front was installed. In 1798 and again in 1819 it was overhauled by the organ builder Georg Wilhelm Wilhelmy . In 1929 the church received a new organ from Emil Hammer Orgelbau . During the major renovation in 1956, it was replaced by an organ by the Euler brothers . In 1969 Dieter Noeske added a Rückpositiv to the organ .

Today's organ has 27 registers divided between two manuals and a pedal . The mechanical action action and the electrical stop action end at the sliding drawer .
