Church of St. Blasius in Engetried

The Catholic parish church of St. Blasius is located in Engetried , a district of Markt Rettenbach in the Unterallgäu district in Bavaria . The church is a listed building.

history

The first parish church in Engetried was mentioned in the middle of the 12th century. However, the choir and nave of the existing church date from the 15th century. The church tower was built later, probably around 1500. The year 1728 is affixed to the sacristy portal. This probably relates to the redesign of the vault and the interior structure of the choir. The church was baroque in the 18th century . Abbot Anselm Erb of the Ottobeuren monastery completed this with the stuccoing and frescoing around 1757.

Building description

South view of St. Blaise

The unplastered church was built from tuff ashlars, whereby the ashlars of the church tower are on average smaller than those of the rest of the church. The nave is a hall with four window axes. In this there is a mirror vault with stitch caps , which rest on pilasters . On the west side of the nave there is a gallery , the middle part of which is slightly curved. The windows of the gallery axis are transversely oval, the other windows in the nave are arched. The slightly indented choir with a 5/8 end connects to the nave through a round choir arch. The choir consists of two window axes and has a needle cap barrel . The windows of the choir were originally pointed arches. On the outside of the choir there are buttresses with water hammer . The church tower is in the northern choir corner. This is unarticulated and with a gable roof covered. At the corners of the basement of the tower there are four flat coats of arms reliefs , on the east side a Piscina spout . The basement of the tower is closed with a ribbed vault . The keystone of the vault is adorned with the coat of arms of the Lords of Stein. Three-part sound arcades on all sides are located on the upper floor of the church tower. The sound arcades are designed in the Romanesque style.

Furnishing

inside view

The high altar is a marbled wooden structure and was created around 1730. The cafeteria is slightly concave. The rotating niche tabernacle dates from the middle of the 18th century . This is decorated with rocailles . The altarpiece probably comes from a workshop in Ottobeur . This depicts God the Father with the Holy Family and Saint Anne . The altarpiece is flanked by one half and two free columns. Between the pillars are the wooden figures of St. Sebastian and Peter of Alcantara . The pull-out niche contains a wooden figure of St. Blaise . The pull-out niche is framed with half-columns and ends with cranked beams and curved gable legs at the top.

Pulpit with images of the apostles from the 18th century

Like the high altar, the side altars with gilded decoration are made of marbled wood and date from the middle of the 18th century. There are glass shrines with wooden figures in both canteens. On the left is a Pieta with two weeping angels from the first half of the 18th century, on the right the Entombment of Christ from the late 15th century. The left altarpiece shows the Holy Family with the family of John the Baptist , on the right the Marriage of Mary is depicted. Both altarpieces are flanked by free columns and figures. The figures show from left to right St. New Year's Eve , St. George , St. Vitus and St. Rochus . Emperor Heraclius is depicted on the left and St. Helena on the right in the curved excerpts in the highly oval images . Above the extracts are the figures of John the Baptist (left) and St. Lawrence (right).

The pulpit dates from the late 18th century and is made of marbled wood. The decor of the pulpit is gold-plated and has a convex curved parapet. The sound cover is populated by three angel putti. The twelve oval images of the apostles date from the middle of the 18th century. The twelve Stations of the Cross date from the same time. The wooden sculptures in the glass shrines of the two side altars serve as the 13th and 14th stations of the cross. Both the frames of the pictures of the apostles and the stations of the cross are gilded and decorated with shellwork.

The two confessionals in the end of the choir are made of walnut and date from around 1720/1730. The confessionals are in three parts, the middle part being drawn forward at an obtuse angle. The confessionals are crowned with almost life-size wooden figures framed in white. St. Peter is depicted on the left and St. Magdalena on the right . On the south wall of the choir is a wall cupboard with the baptismal water vessel in the shape of Noah's Ark from the mid-18th century. This is made of marbled wood. The door is painted with the representation of the baptism of Christ.

There are several wooden figures in the church. The crucifix of the crucifixion group dates from around 1600, despite its name Mission 1769 . However, the two figures of Maria and Johannes date from around 1769. Another crucifix comes from the first half of the 18th century. The figure of St. Blaise was created around 1720/30.

Representations from the life of St. Blaise

The ceiling painting in the choir addresses the first secret of the joyous rosary with the motif of the Annunciation. This painting is labeled Ant. Jos. Walch pinx. Kauffb 1757 . It was restored in 1884 and 1931 and is surrounded by grisaille painting with the next four secrets. The ceiling painting in the nave is marked Anton Joseph Walch 1757 . The main picture depicts the life and transfiguration of St. Blaise. The spandrels are executed in wine-red tone painting and represent the five secrets of the painful rosary. The five secrets of the glorious rosary are shown in yellow tone painting in the cartouches. In the other fields there is a picture of the poor souls in purgatory, a heart of Mary and a heart of Jesus depiction. Late medieval fragments of the depiction of the Last Judgment are said to be on the east wall of the nave behind the left side altar. The stucco of the church dates from around 1757. Above the choir arch is the Ottobeurer coat of arms of Abbot Anselm Erb.

In the church there are several grave monuments made of sandstone . These are the epitaphs for Hans Friedrich von und zum Stein († 1578), Hans Caspar von Schönau zu Stein-Ronsberg († 1595), Sabina von Schönau († 1615) and Hans Caspar von und zu Schönau zum Stein († 1656), all installed in the choir of the church. In the nave there is an epitaph for Michael Greitter († 1717). Two more sandstone tombs from 1801 and 1827 are on the outside wall of the church.
