history

In the middle of the 12th century, the Counts of Calvelage-Ravensberg built a castle at the transition over the Moorbachtal. The first St. George's parish church was built around 1200 for the craftsmen and merchants' settlement emerging near the castle.

architecture

St. Georg is an east - facing three-aisled Westphalian hall church made of brick. The architectural style is late Gothic with a clear Renaissance influence . The three nave - yokes are separated by powerful columns, the vault carry. This is followed by the polygonal choir with star-shaped intertwined stitch caps . Destruction and restoration brought changes with them. The main features of the current church were built in 1452. The current appearance of the church dates back to 1598. In 1722 the massive tower with a baroque Welsch dome was added. From 2003 to 2007 the church was extensively renovated.

Furnishing

St. Georg has valuable furnishings . The altarpiece , pulpit and communion bench are works of the 18th century. Two arm-shaped reliquaries of St. Alexander from around 1220–1230 came here in 1699 from the Alexander monastery in Wildeshausen as part of the relocation of the Alexander chapter to Vechta. Also located in the church a Renaissance - cuppa on a late Gothic shaft of the baptismal font. The cup was created by the sculptor Johann Brabender from Münster ( Westphalia ) around 1540.

The most valuable part of the church treasure is a silver ray Madonna, which was made in 1636/1640 by Wilhelm Fesenmayr, an Augsburg goldsmith. It was given to the church in 1655 by Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen on the occasion of the liberation from Swedish rule.

A mounted next to the southern entrance to the outer wall of the church sandstone - Epitaph represents the 1,597 deceased knight Johann of Dorgelo is this belonged in the 16th century, the Good puppy..

The organ was built in 1963 by Alfred Führer ( Wilhelmshaven ). The slider chests -instrument has 39 registers on three manuals and pedal . The action mechanism is mechanical, the stop action is electrical. In 2018 the organ was renovated by Harm Dieder Kirchner ( Weener ); In addition to several changes in the disposition, a new typesetting system was installed.
