St. Laurentius (Presberg)
The Catholic Church of St. Laurentius is a listed church building in Presberg , a district of the city of Rüdesheim am Rhein . Today it is a branch church of the parish Heilig Kreuz Rheingau, a new type of parish. The so-called Rheingau Cathedral in Geisenheim has also been the parish church of Presberg since 2015 .
history
Presberg originally belonged to the mother church of St. Martin in Lorch and was looked after by chaplains from there. A document from 1400 proves that the pastor of Lorch, Heinrich Sander, donated money, chalice, missal, chasuble and accessories for the chapel in Presberg. The first chapel must have been built around this time. The von Breidbach zu Lorch family owned the patronage rights .
On November 9, 1655 Presberg was raised to its own parish after years of struggle for independence from Lorch. But she remained tied to Lorch, which repeatedly led to quarrels and lawsuits.
The neighboring town of Stephanshausen , which originally belonged to Lorch's mother church, became part of Winkel in 1577 . Because of the inadequate pastoral care by chaplains von Winkel, the request was made to be taken care of by the new Presberg parish. This request was granted in 1655, but because of the low funding, the Presberg pastor did not adequately fulfill his obligation to hold a weekly mass in St. Michael (Stephanshausen) . In 1687 there were massive complaints. Only a comparison and pressure from Elector Anselm Franz von Ingelheim (1634–1695) brought the desired improvement.
With the help of the cathedral provost of Mainz , who was also pastor of Lorch, and the patron saint of Breidbach, the chapel was expanded to become today's church in 1700. It was dedicated to St. Lawrence, existing relics were the same in 1783, at a visitation , authenticated .
Until 1840 the von Breidbach were patron saints of St. Laurentius in Presberg. After they inherited the Heddernheim Castle from the von Ried family and made it their residence, they exchanged the Presberg patronage for that of Heddernheim with the Duke of Nassau . The ordinariate of the Limburg diocese was passed over without being asked, which is why the exchange was still considered illegal there in 1855.
Due to the risk of collapse, the western gable wall and the bell tower had to be removed in 1927. They were replaced by a new porch with roof turrets towards the west as far as the state road. The consecration of the enlarged church took place in April 1929. In 1952 the bells lost in the war were replaced. In 1964 a new sacristy was added to the south wall of the choir.
In the 1980s, groups of parishes in the Diocese of Limburg were combined into so-called pastoral rooms . Presberg belonged to the pastoral area Geisenheim until 2015, then the parish Heilig Kreuz Rheingau was founded, to whose 13 church locations the Presberg branch now also belongs. The parish church of the new parish is the Rheingau Cathedral in Geisenheim .
architecture
The church of St. Laurentius is a simple, rectangular hall building that was renovated around 1700 . The nave is separated by a triumphal arch from a three-sided, retracted choir , in which parts of the previous chapel from 1400 have been preserved. The unadorned flat ceiling is supported by a central longitudinal beam.
The church interior is accessed through two opposite entrance doors in the rear part of the north and south walls under a large organ gallery. This part of the church was rebuilt around 1928.
There are arched windows in the nave, in the west wall behind the gallery and in the choir, and four round windows in the entrance area under the organ grandstand. The windows are lead-glazed , light -glass in the nave, and stained glass in the choir and under the gallery . The inside of the church is plastered and painted lightly, only the choir arch and the parapet of the organ gallery are provided with historical paintings.
The slate-covered gable roof is crowned by a six-sided bell ridge with a hood and lantern . The exposed brickwork of the outer walls consists of local slate rubble .
