The Catholic parish church of St. Mary's Birth is a listed church building in Baasem , a district of the municipality of Dahlem in the Euskirchen district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The community belongs to the diocese of Aachen. A Church of the Nativity of Mary is dedicated to the mother of Jesus, the patronage is the feast of the Nativity of Mary, which is celebrated on September 8th. The church is part of the fifth stage of the Way of St. James from Blankenheim to Kronenburg.

History and architecture

A chapel in Baasem is documented for the first time at the beginning of the 14th century . It was raised to the rank of vicarie in 1486 and was under the patronage of the Lords of Kronenburg. In 1539 the patronage passed to the Counts of Manderscheid-Schleiden. St. Mary's Birth was raised to the parish church in 1659.

The two-aisled late Gothic hall church of five bays is in a central location. It was built around 1500 with rich stone and net vaults on four octagonal and round pillars. Two-aisled churches only appear sporadically in the Eifel, also in the neighboring municipality of Kronenburg . The rare architectural style was probably brought to the region by Cardinal Nikolaus Cusanus . The southern nave closes on three sides, the northern one with a flat-arched apse . In the interior, star and net vaults rest on slender pillars without capital; the main keystones are carved. The sacristy in the north choir was built in 1890 based on a design by Heinrich Wiethase . In the course of time the church has been rebuilt several times, during the Second World War it was badly damaged. Most of the damage was repaired by 1949. In the years 1954 and 1955 the interior was on the findings taken . The substructure of the tower was probably built in the Romanesque period, the upper floors around 1559. The tower is a defensive tower , a bent slate pyramid is placed on it.

Bells

The church's peal originally consisted of three bells cast in 1483, 1511 and 1732. In 1942 the bells were confiscated in order to melt them down for war purposes. The two large bells were smashed during collection, the small bell was returned to the community in 1947, albeit with a crack. To complement the chimes, two new bells were cast in the Brockscheid foundry in 1949. In 1976 the old bell was replaced by a new one, also cast in Brockscheid , as it did not harmonize with the sound of the new bells. The old bell is part of the church's fund .

Mary Altar

In the north aisle there is a red sandstone Marian altar with a three-storey structure in Renaissance shapes . It was donated in 1625 by two canons of Essen Abbey and is signed S.F. The figure of the Virgin Mary in the central niche was stolen in 1870 and replaced by a copy. Above the niche, Jesus is shown as a young man in the temple , surrounded by many people. Above is a representation of the death of Mary and to the right and left of it figures of the evangelists John and Matthew. The relief on the bottom left shows the flight to Egypt , the bottom right shows the frightened couple's search for Jesus.

Church window

Colorful church windows were built into the choir in 1893, the first motif windows followed in 1910. All windows were destroyed in the Second World War. Unadorned windows were initially installed as a temporary measure. Then the Derrix art glasswork from Kevelaer manufactured new leaded glass windows based on designs by Hubert Schaffmeister . The windows depict the following scenes: Noah's Ark , the Prophet Moses (Moses knocks water out of the rock), the Apostle Peter, the Trinity , the birth of Mary, Saints Donatus , Ruth and Elijah, the progenitor Abraham and the exaltation of the brazen Snake in the desert. The window above the entrance portal shows the returning Christ, the cross and the flame. It was made from 1984 to 1986 to designs by Hubert Schaffmeister from antique and opal glass with lead and black solder . The 20th Century Research Center for Stained Glass Foundation has included the church building in its investigations for the comprehensive collection of stained glass.

Other equipment

  • The neo-Gothic high altar was made according to a design by Wiethase. The choir windows at that time were very dazzling and so in 1933 the altar was backed with a plywood panel. The panel was removed again in 1989 after the new windows were installed.
  • The baptismal font was made, according to a name, in 1559 from a Roman workpiece, probably an oil mill. It was returned to the church in 1976. A new font was designed by Wiethase around 1885, it is currently on a pillar on the west side.
  • The organ was built in 1964 by the master organ builder Ernst Seifert from Bergisch Gladbach. It has 18 registers , two manuals and a pedal . The organ was consecrated on September 13, 1964. The full-time organist and choirmaster is the church musician Friedbert Ströder, who is also organist at the St. Hieronymus Church in Dahlem and is the musical director of the Small Cantorei Dahlem .
