Parish church

The Catholic parish church of St. Maria Magdalena and Lucia is a listed church building in Bruchhausen , a district of Arnsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The community belongs to the parish of St. Petri Hüsten in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

history

As a result of the industrialization of the place, especially by the Hüsten trade union and the Holzverkohlungsindustrie AG (later Degussa ), the population of the place had increased significantly. Previously considered parish used Rodentelgenkapelle was therefore too small. Even before the First World War , money was collected to build a larger church. This capital was devalued by inflation. After the war a new attempt was made. In 1923 a committee was formed for the construction of a new church, but no agreement was reached for the time being on the building site. A site behind the school on Gartenstrasse and the current location were available. Architect Lehmenkühler from Cologne was commissioned with the planning. After the Paderborn plan was approved, it turned out that the church was too small for the now growing community. The architect Karl Freckmann received the order for a new plan. The church council approved the new construction plan, according to which the cost estimate was 220,000 marks. Since only 40,000 marks were available, it could not be carried out. The board rejected a revised plan with a simpler implementation. Now Freckmann simplified the first draft, which Paderborn did not approve. The size of the tower and the rich furnishings of the church did not meet with approval. The first draft was then simplified. It was also decided to build without a tower. But the plan met with sharp criticism from the church authorities. Above all, the size, design of the tower and the rich furnishings were criticized. Freckmann expressed sharp criticism, which led to difficulties in approving the planned collection in 1924. The parishioners began the construction work on their own, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on March 29, 1925. About 80 volunteers as well as farmers provided their labor and clamping services . The company Johannes Becker from Menden took over the masonry work, which began at the end of May, at a reasonable price. A house collection in the archdiocese and donations from parishioners closed the existing funding gaps. The spiritual council of Meckel laid the foundation stone on June 29th, it is walled in on the left side of the choir. In it is a small copper box decorated with a chased goblet, with a certificate each in Latin and in German, as well as a copy of the Ruhr-Möhne-Zeitung and the Zentralvolksblatt. Furthermore, all valid currency coins up to 3 marks and pictures of the old chapel are included. The text of the document reads: In the name of and in honor of the Most Holy Trinity, invoking the merits of the divine Redeemer Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin and Mother of God Mary and all saints, especially pleading with Mary, the patroness of the Rodentelgen Chapel, who has been venerated for centuries -Magdalena, to whom this church is to be consecrated, is on June 29th, the feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul, in the jubilee year 1925, in the 4th year of the glorious reign of Pope Pius XI. while Dr. Caspar Klein was Bishop of Paderborn in the 7th year after the end of the Great World War, when Paul von Hindenburg, the greatest military leader in that war, was President of the German Republic, is the cornerstone of this church of the Dechant and Geistl. Council Dr. Meckel, pastor in Hüsten, was laid with the request that the building be erected and completed in honor of Almighty God and for the salvation of all who seek spiritual exaltation here and perform pious prayers. .... The following is a list of various teachers, clergymen and politicians, as well as data on the community. During this time there was another discussion about the construction of a church tower, with the result that the tower should be raised. In the winter of 1925/1926, work on the building had to be temporarily suspended due to snowfall and bad weather. Volunteers built around 1,000 m³ of earth into the floor. The company Zotz from Münster made the stucco work at a very reasonable price . The windows could be bought with donated funds. Bishop Caspar Klein consecrated the church on September 12, 1926. During the Second World War , a bomb fell directly on the choir , it destroyed all windows and damaged the choir, the roof, the cornice , the high altar and the figures. The necessary renovation work dragged on until 1949. In 1976 the building was extensively renovated inside and outside, while the choir room was enlarged at the same time, the altar could be rearranged in accordance with the specifications of the Second Vatican Council . The last extensive renovation took place in 2003/2004 under the direction of the Ringelhan architects' office. The plaster was partially renewed and cleaned. In three work steps, the vaults and walls were given a highly glazed coating of silicate paint , in which gray and ocher tones predominate. The old bronzes were replaced by matt gilding and the bowls in the vaulted ceilings were painted. The invitation to tender for the design of the medallions took place in an artist's competition, which Stefan Pietryga won, he painted the dome in the crossing . Four cloths were sketched out in the dome and then painted glazed in the colors green, yellow, blue and red. The medallion in the choir shows the night sky with cosmic elements, it is mostly kept in shades of blue. The medallion above the organ loft is decorated with a lush floral arrangement in which green and earth tones predominate. The medallion in the nave looks like a blazing fire, the underground is glazed with a bluish tinge. The smallest medallion is the one on the parapet of the gallery. Here you can see several human bodies in ultramarine blue, which are supposed to symbolize the people of God. In the center stands a person with outspread arms

Building description

overall view

The neo-baroque hall church with half-height ancillary rooms, a transept and an apse was built from 1925 to 1926 by Karl Freckmann, district architect of the Arnsberg district . The lower part of the convex, arched facade consists of bosses ashlars . The order of the pilasters inside is ionic . The drawn-in flat barrel vault is stuccoed . The nave arrangement with rhythmic travée was built based on the model of the Fulda Cathedral. The crossing dome looks mighty, the ceiling of the nave is barrel vaulted . Transverse buoys were pulled into both aisles. The building was plastered in 1937. The interior is 681 m². It offers 480 seats and 1050 standing places. An extensive interior renovation was carried out in 2004.

Furnishing

Altars

Baroque altar

An oak altarpiece with cartilage decoration and vine columns from the middle of the 17th century was built in the Johann Sasse workshop . It previously stood in the chapel in Rodentelgen and was extensively restored in 1978. The twisted columns and the putti , as they can also be seen on the pulpit, are strongly reminiscent of the altars in Corvey Monastery . The columns, profiles and ornaments are made of softwood . In the middle part is the Pietà , presumably an altarpiece with Jesus as the good shepherd used to be attached here. In the shell niches next to it are the figures of Luzia and Magdalena, the niches are bordered by columns and entwined with vines. An older Luzia figure was lost. The figure of Magdalena was probably carved by Johann Nikolaus Düringer from Hadamar , it is about 66 cm tall. The underdress is silver-plated, the overdress is trimmed with gold. In the medallions above the Saints Anthony Hermit , Peter and Paul can be seen.

Celebration altar

Josef Schnitzer from Buching built the new celebratory altar in 1954, the altarpiece is a work by Magnus Hutter from Marktoberdorf , it depicts the crucifixion scene. Maria and Maria Magdalena stand at the feet of Jesus. The altar is 9.50 meters high and 5.5 meters wide . The semicircular base is made of colored stucco marble , four slender columns of marble rise above it. They are crowned by Corinthian columns that have been gilded. The massive structure of the gable dissolves into baroque forms. The consecration of the altar was carried out by Auxiliary Bishop Paul-Werner Scheele .

Side altars

The two side altars are designed in the style of the high altar. The Joseph Altar is in the right part of the transept and the Marien Altar on the left. Like the high altar, they were made by Schnitzer from Buching and the altarpieces were painted by Hotter. In the picture of the Joseph altar, the former Degussa factory , the local parish church and the Böstering farm are shown, they are supposed to symbolize the community. The picture in the altar of Mary shows St. Peter's Basilica in the middle and Fatima and Lourdes on the sides as places of devotion to Mary .

Outstanding pieces of equipment

Romanesque cross

A Romanesque wooden crucifix dates from around 1230 and depicts Christ as the victorious king over life and death . The cross is in Latin form, the beam is extended downwards. The corpus was probably made during the time of the Crusades, it probably belonged to a lecture cross. The cross beams with the closing squares and the depictions of the four evangelists were added more recently. The golden crown of the crucified is also a more recent work, the setting and the crown were later renewed.

Figure of Mary Magdalene

A St. Maria Magdalena made of wood from the end of the 17th century is about 90 cm tall, as an attribute she holds an ointment vessel in her slender hands, which is why she was erroneously referred to as Barbara. The body is covered with a wrinkled robe. This work by Johann Nikolaus Düringer from Olpe appears timeless in its presentation. Hands and face are rather roughly shaped.

Other equipment

  • A collection for a new organ, which could be built in 1943, took place in 1930. In 1996, Siegfried Sauer built a new building in a new housing . Old holdings of the predecessor organ by Randebrock from 1873 have been integrated. The organ has 16 registers , which are distributed over two manuals.
  • The baroque pulpit from around 1700 was built in the Sasse workshop; it originally stood in Kirchhundem and was found there on the threshing floor of the pastor's house and came here in 1927. Parts of the staircase and the lance of the Archangel Michael, which crowns the sound cover, have been added. During the restoration in the 1980s, the very colorful color version was replaced by a more subtle one, which, according to the feeling at the time, went better with the other furnishings. This version has been preserved to this day.
  • The relics of Saints Desiderius and Secundus were walled up in the altar in 1926.
  • Two paintings, one from 1669 depicts St. Mary , the other from 1672 shows St. Lucia . They were donated by the Mayor of Arnsberg, Johann Bildefelt, for the church in Rodentelgen. The frames with a corrugated inner strip are black. In the cartouche of the painting of the Virgin Mary is written: S. Maria (Sihe selich say all genders. Lv.1) Johann Bildefelt B. Meister zu Arnsperch D. D: 1669 . In the cartouche of the painting with the depiction of Luzia can be read: S. Lucia Patroness 3 v Rodentelgen Out of the middle of the same Cavellen give 1672 The pictures have a size of about 80 × 190 cm.
  • A Mannerist style Pietà dates from the 17th century and originally stood in the pilgrimage church in Rodentelgen. The figure, carved from linden wood, shows the suffering mother Mary with her lifeless son.
  • The Way of the Cross was painted by Magnus Hotter in 1931, who also made the altarpiece.
  • There are four statues in niches that were made in 1939 by the baroque carver Phillipp Wiegmann from Paderborn; the acquisition was made possible through donations. It is the depiction of Saints Joseph, Liborius, Boniface and Peter. An attack by wood pests made thermal treatment necessary in 2004.
  • A framed document from 1464 hangs in the right aisle. It bears witness to the partial destruction of the Rodentelgen Chapel by a flood of the Ruhr. It was rebuilt and expanded in 1659.
  • A picture of the good shepherd from around 1645 hangs above the certificate. The pastor at the time, Petrus Berghs, is shown receiving the commission to pasture my sheep from Jesus . In the background there are two churches, one of which is the parish church in Hüsten.

Bells

After the Second World War, the church was without bells. Because of the shortage of materials, the bell foundry from Brilon made compensation demands that the municipality could not meet. Klemens Föckeler, a son of the community, was the director of a steel works in Offenbach, he agreed to take over the compensation and also the costs for the three bells. The bell foundry made a fourth bell available on its own initiative. A bell expert certified the bell: ... In summary, it can be said that the Junker company has succeeded in creating a bell that has all the good properties. Clear melody through the striking notes, clean interior harmony, powerful and uniform sound with calmly flowing and long-lasting reverberation. The consecration of the bells took place on May 9, 1948.
