The Church of St. Martin is a Roman Catholic parish church in Schwalbach in the Saarland , Saarlouis district . Saint Martin is the church patron . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

history

The church was built between 1905 and 1907 according to plans by the architect Ernst Brand. The reconstruction took place from 1945 to 1950.

In 2007 the parish of St. Martin and the four other parishes of the Schwalbach parish, Herz Jesu in Griesborn , Assumption of Mary in Elm- Sprengen, St. Josef in Elm-Derlen and St. Laurentius in Hülzweiler , became the parish of Heilig Cross . The church of St. Martin received the status of the parish church.

Architecture and equipment

The church building was built in the neo-Gothic style. The basic architectural form of the house of God is a basilica . The nave , divided into a central nave and two lower aisles , is divided into four bays . A transept adjoins the nave , followed by a five-sided choir with a polygonal finish. The shape of a Latin cross results as a floor plan . The ceilings of the ships are formed by ribbed vaults.

The lead glass windows were designed by the glass painter Tristan Ruhlmann ( Hagenau in Alsace ) between 1954 and 1956, whereby the choir center, epistle and gospel windows were not made until 1972/73. The furnishings for two chapels in the church were also made by Ruhlmann.

Further items of equipment are three richly designed altars ( high altar , two side altars), various figures of saints , a triumphal cross , a Pietà , a baptismal font , confessionals and the stations of the cross .
The high altar is designed in the form of a Gothic winged altar . The four tablets of the reredos show scenes from the
New Testament in relief : the birth of Christ , the last supper , the crucifixion of Christ and the resurrection of Christ . The Joseph altar on the right is from the previous church.

On the exterior above the side portal there is a mosaic depicting Saint Martin. On the forecourt of the church there is a Marian column from 1954 by Rudolf Schilling ( Munich ) .
