The Church of St. Peter is a Roman Catholic church in Bisten , a district of the Saarland community of Überherrn , Saarlouis district . Saint Peter is the church patron . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

history

The origins of the church can be traced back to the 13th century. According to a draft for a church chronicle, the Wadgassen monastery is named as the owner of the ownership rights to a chapel in Bisten for the year 1221 . Catholics from neighboring Überherrn also came to the services in the Bisten Chapel. In order to cope with the resulting cramped space conditions, the responsible bishop of Metz demanded an extension of the church in 1781. In addition to enlarging the existing chapel, the bishop also addressed the possibility of a completely new church building. The decision was made to build a new building that could be completed by 1788. Johann Girard and Johann Guerich are named as architects of the church.

After the French Revolution , Bisten, which until then belonged to the diocese of Metz, was assigned to the diocese of Trier . In 1808, Bishopric was raised to an independent parish .

The first structural changes to the church initially affected the interior. A gallery was built there in 1842 , and a few years later, around the middle of the 19th century, the church received a high altar created by Andreas Guldner . As part of these renovations, Guldner was also responsible for an interior renovation .

In 1894 three new bells were handed over to their destination. A new organ , which is still in use today, was put into service in 1905. As part of the installation of the new organ, a neo-Gothic high altar, two side altars, new confessionals and pews were also purchased.

The removal of the last damage that the Second World War left on the church building could be carried out in the 1950s. In the years 1969 to 1973 the church underwent renovation measures both on the outside and inside. Inside, the requirements of the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council were implemented. As a result, the neo-Gothic altars built in 1905 were removed again.

Restoration work was carried out in 1988 and 2005 .

Architecture and equipment

The church building was built in the classicism style. It is divided from west to east into the steeple with a pointed helmet , the three-axis nave and the five-sided polygonal choir . In the south facade of the church tower is the round arched main portal crowned with a flat triangular gable . In the interior, a triumphal arch supported by pillars separates the choir from the nave. The year 1788, the year of the consecration of the church, can be seen in the keystone of the arch. The flat ceiling of the nave is connected to the side walls by a hollow .

In the choir there is a baroque side altar from the pilgrimage church of Klausen , which functions as a high altar and replaces the neo-Gothic high altar from 1905 that was removed as part of the interior renovation in the late 1960s and early 1970s. To replace the remote also in the aforementioned interior renovation a side altars were Marien - console and an old restored Petrus- statue attached.

Facilities also include the baptismal font from 1726 and from Vosges sandstone made people's altar .

Various figures of saints are placed on consoles on the side walls of the nave, two sculptures in arched niches under the gallery flank the entrance to the church.
