The Catholic branch church of St. Peter and Paul in Höglwörth , a district of the municipality of Anger in the Upper Bavarian district of Berchtesgadener Land , was originally the collegiate church of the Augustinian canons of Höglwörth, founded around 1125 . The current church was rebuilt in the 17th century in the Baroque style. Between 1760 and 1785 the church was redesigned in the Rococo style . The church consecrated to the apostles Peter and Paul is a protected architectural monument .

history

A three-aisled basilica was consecrated in 1219 . Only the choir remains from this previous Romanesque building. In 1311 the church was rebuilt in the Gothic style . A new church was built between 1675 and 1689 and was consecrated in 1689. An extensive restoration of the church took place between 1979 and 1986.

On the north side, the square bell tower with an onion dome rises in place of the original medieval two-tower facade . The single-nave nave has a needle cap barrel which rests on strong pilasters with cranked beams . A gallery with a curved parapet forms the western end of the nave . The retracted, rectangular closed choir, which goes back to the Romanesque church building, is covered by a groin vault.

Stucco and ceiling paintings

The stucco decoration in the late Rococo style was carried out by Benedikt Zöpf , the ceiling frescoes are by Franz Nikolaus Streicher . The Last Supper scene is shown on the ceiling painting in the choir . The large nave fresco bears the signature: “F. St. pin. 1765 “and depicts the Assumption of Mary . In the middle of the picture, surrounded by the apostles Peter and Paul, St. Augustine , St. Norbert , St. Benedict and St. Scholastica can be seen. At the lower edge of the picture, Augustinian canons and the founder of the monastery, Count Luitpold III. von Plain († 1219), to the foundation of the monastery. The side ceiling paintings also refer to the founding of the monastery. The fresco above the gallery shows King David with the harp and Saint Cecilia at the organ. You are surrounded by the four Latin Fathers of the Church , St. Ambrose , St. Augustine, Pope Gregory and St. Jerome . In the center of the picture is the Christ monogram , which is framed by the evangelist symbols.

Furnishing

  • The high altar is a viersäuliger shrine -Altar from the mid-18th century. On the side are the carved figures of the church patrons Peter and Paul. The altarpiece shows the transfiguration of Christ with the prophets Moses on the left and Elias on the right as well as John the Baptist and the apostles Peter and James at the feet . It was created by Francesco Vanni in 1601 .
  • Like the ceiling frescoes, the altarpieces on the four side altars were made by Franz Nikolaus Streicher.
  • The classical altars under the gallery were designed by Wolfgang Hagenauer , the sculptures were created by the sculptor Franz de Paula Hitzl.
  • At the entrance to the sacristy is the carved, colored half relief figure of the donor Luitpold III. from Plain, which was created around 1500, probably by Lienhart Astl , for his Tumba . Count Luitpold is dressed in late Gothic armor , he holds his coat of arms banner in his right hand and his sword in his left hand.
