The Triftern parish church , consecrated to St. Stephen , is located in the Lower Bavarian community of Triftern .

history

Triftern is mentioned as a Truftara at the time of the Passau bishop Reginhar von Passau . At that time, a monastery property from Postmünster passed to the bishop. This was handed over to the local pastor to equip the parish of Triftern, and the church was given the patronage of the cathedral church in Passau , namely that of the martyr St. Stephan. 1170 Triftern is attested as a secular parish, this year the priest handed Impertus the Monastery Asbach several possessions.

In 1193, the lower part of the church tower was built from hump stone blocks as a defense tower . This could only be entered via a ladder on the first floor, and two underground passages were created so that the tower could be left unseen. In the 13th century were the bishop I of Plain Gebhard income of Triftern the Passauer cathedral chapter granted on condition that all over the diocese of Passau the feast of St. Rupert was celebrated. In 1684 Triftern fell back to the Diocese of Passau. In 1291 Pope Pius IV had given the church in Triftern a letter of indulgence ; at that time St. Nicholas the church patron.

Up until the 17th century Triftern was the seat of a deanery , which was then moved to parish churches . Today the parish Triftern belongs to the deanery parish churches and forms the parish association Triftern with the parish Neukirchen bei Pfarrkirchen.

construction

The present church dates largely from the years 1465 to 1473 ( nave , central nave and octagonal tower tower) and was built by the master builder Michael Sallinger. The client was Pastor Albert Schönhofer , later Auxiliary Bishop of Passau. The west tower, the former defensive tower, has moved into the nave. Its eight-axis superstructure is late Gothic . After the Gothic tower pyramid collapsed, a baroque dome was added in 1741 .

The choir dates from around 1490. In the three-aisled west gallery there is a fresco from 1583.

The late Gothic single-nave building from the second half of the 15th century received two aisles in 1860/61. The interior of the church is neo-Gothic. The side aisles are neo-Gothic and were built on the occasion of the church expansion in 1860/61. In 1861 an organ was installed. The neo-Gothic furnishings (high altar, side altars, pulpit and stations of the cross) were made between 1865 and 1871 by the Munich sculptor Anselm Sickinger .

Furnishing

The high altar shows the church patron in the middle part, to the left of him is St. Laurentius and on the right St. Vincent of Saragossa . The statues of Bishop Maximilian and Wandering Bishop Valentin can also be found here .

The right side altar is a Christ altar . In the middle part, Christ shows his wounds to the unbelieving Thomas . In addition, the Hll. Peter and Paul depicted in half relief . Next to it are the Hll. Florian and Sebastian . The left side altar is a Marian altar . In the middle picture, Mary gives St. Dominic a rosary . As secondary characters here are St. Dorothea and St. Barbara set up.

The pulpit shows Christ and the four evangelists . Tapes contain the texts of the Ten Commandments . At the sounding board the busts of the four are Fathers attached with their symbols.

The baroque choir arch cross dates from 1660. At the lower end there is the coat of arms of pastor Andreas Schott. The organ was built or expanded by the companies Wölfl and Meier from 1963 to 1974. The organ has three manuals and 56 stops. With its 3820 pipes, it is the fourth largest organ in the Diocese of Passau.

There are a number of inscribed tombstones in the church. For example the red marble tombstone of Leo von Lenberg zu Triftern (around 1520) with a relief image of the crucified and the kneeling family, Albrecht Schenkh von Stauffenberg († December 10, 1633), the Countess Maria Anna Barbara zu Lodron († June 10 1765), the dean Maximilian Ferdinand Hormayr von Hortenberg († April 11, 1757), the pastor Andreas Schott († December 18, 1684) as well as a plaque to the Nazi victim Franz Jägerstätter .
