City of peace

City of Peace is the additional name for a number of cities in different countries and parts of the world, which in the general cultural-philosophical sense are referred to as those that have specifically declared themselves to be such in the past or that are in a phase of development towards Understand “City of Peace”.

City of Peace in the general cultural-philosophical sense

Even in ancient times, cities with a wide range of cultural traditions were given the attribute "City of Peace".

In the German Democratic Republic

• Berlin . In February 1979 the Moscow- controlled World Peace Council met on the Spree. Its chairman, the Indian Romesh Chandra , awarded the city in the Komische Oper in the presence of the Berlin SED chief Konrad Naumann - this honorary designation in the presence of a "delegation of outstanding workers". A few years later,an inscription on Berlin's title of peace was placedon a wall of houses at the entrance to the Nikolaiviertel in the immediate vicinity of the Rotes Rathaus . The goldenpigeon on Spandauer Strasse , based on a Picasso design, is framed by the words “Berlin - City of Peace”. The design of the pigeon relief was created in 1986 by the East Berlin sculptor Gerhard Thieme . After the establishment of the unity of the divided city, the representatives of the current western part were not able to adopt the additional designation for the entire capital that formerly only existed in the eastern part.

In the Federal Republic of Germany

• Suhl : Due to its history as the location of armaments factories , the elected representatives of the city council declared Suhl a "City of Peace" on February 14, 1991.
• Nuremberg describes itself as the “city of peace and human rights”, in a negative way of distinguishing it from its history, because it was the venue for all Nazi party rallies of the NSDAP ; on the other hand positive because it became known as the meeting place ofthe Allied International Military Tribunal over the German Reich.
• Today Osnabrück is the seat of the German Foundation for Peace Research . In 780 the city was founded by Charlemagne as a bishopric , in 1648the Peace of Westphalia was concludedhere and in the city of Münster , which is why the city is also known as the "City of Peace".

In the Netherlands

• The Hague as the seat of large international institutions of international law in the UN system, such as:
  • International Court of Justice ,
  • International Criminal Court (together with the International Criminal Court for the former Yugoslavia and the associated United Nations Detention Unit ),
  • Permanent Court of Arbitration ,
  • Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons

In Switzerland

• Geneva . By the presence z. B. of these institutions in its urban area sees itself authorized to see itself as a “city of peace”:
  • United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG).
  • World Trade Organization (WTO)
  • United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)
  • International Labor Organization (ILO)
  • World Health Organization (WHO)
  • United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)

In Norway

• Oslo . The Norwegian capital hasgained international attentionthanks to the “ Oslo Peace Process ”that has been running for several years, but has so far been unsuccessful, and is therefore motivated to advertise itself as the “City of Peace”.

City of Peace on the way to achieving this aspired title

Since the end of the Second World War , the phenomenon has been observed that mainly European cities are treading imaginative local political paths in order to obtain the designation “City of Peace”. These municipalities strive to achieve this goal through profiling in the field of disarmament policy , through initiatives to raise awareness, through measures in the field of cultural policy, in the form of in-depth processing of their own history, etc. the resulting political processes are unmistakable. This applies e.g. B. to these cities:

• Aachen . A citizens' initiative of this city declared: "The signatories undertake to support the process of making Aachen a city of peace and to promote it through their own and joint initiatives."

• Dresden . With a peace appeal in 2008, a broad civic alliance of anti-fascist , peace, justice and environment-oriented groups decided to make the city of Dresden a "city of peace, democracy and human rights". The starting point is the extensive destruction of the city during the war and the recent increasing attempts by the neo-Nazi scene to abusethis historic mortgage for their goals. This goal was confirmed on February 13, 2010 by a human chainin which 15,000 people took part.

Peace Appeal 2008

• Tübingen . Here a peace coordination of various groups operating in Tübingen issued a "peace appeal" calling on the people of Tübingen to proclaim a "city of peace".
