The Mecklenburg-Strelitz line of the ducal house of Mecklenburg was created on March 8, 1701 as a result of the third division of Mecklenburg mainland agreed in the Hamburg settlement . Adolf Friedrich II , Duke of Mecklenburg, is considered to be the founder of the line . Among his male descendants are all the regents of the newly formed Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz , who until the end of the monarchy were initially called Duke of Mecklenburg , from June 28, 1815, as Grand Duke of Mecklenburg etc. A title addition to the name of the Strelitz part of the country was only used colloquially. These title additions were z. B. used on coins, postage stamps, certificates, medals and to avoid confusion in diplomatic and legal transactions, but were never part of the official title.

The Princely House of Mecklenburg had agreed on the principle of succession of primogeniture for the dynasty in the Hamburg hereditary comparison . Nevertheless, the accession to the throne of the 14-year-old Duke Adolf Friedrich IV at the turn of the year 1752/53 again brought political entanglements, which can be explained by the political struggle between princes and knighthood in the country in the run-up to the Land Constitutional Hereditary Compensation (LGGEV). The ruling line of Mecklenburg-Strelitz of the Mecklenburg dynasty capable of succeeding the throne ended in 1934 with Carl Michael .

Descendants in the Mecklenburg-Strelitz line are still alive today. In order to maintain the former title Duke of Mecklenburg (which had become a family name according to the Weimar Constitution), Carl Michael Herzog zu Mecklenburg adopted the son of his brother Georg Alexander . The former Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Friedrich Franz IV. , Recognized the adoption under house law on the condition that it did not establish a right to the throne. On December 18, 1950, the (former) Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich Franz and Adolf Friedrich Herzog zu Mecklenburg (-Schwerin) Georg Herzog zu Mecklenburg attested the use of the predicate "Highness" and the title "Chief of Mecklenburg-Strelitzer", which had been common for the dukes until 1918 House ”. For dynastic questions, adoption and its consequences remained meaningless.
