Statistics on the pilot whale catch in the Faroe Islands

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The statistics on pilot whales in the Faroe Islands are considered to be the oldest hunting statistics in the world.

It has been fully documented since 1709; In the years 1584 to 1638 it is incomplete, between 1639 and 1708 with the exception of 1664 it was not preserved. Until 1990 only pilot whales are listed . Beached other whales and dolphins were not taken into account until then.

The column headings of the table have the following meanings: Grindir are pilot whale capture events , whales are the individuals killed and Skinn is a unit of measurement, in this case 1 Skinn = 38 kg of whale meat + 34 kg of whale blubber.

Pilot whale meat is not traded, but goes to all islanders according to a distribution key. It's free now, as it was then. The statistics can be used to determine the average number of whales that were killed by the Faroese in a grind.

Word meaning

Grind is not only the pilot whale meat, but also a herd of pilot whales or a pilot whale school . The plural is grindir. A grind is also a pilot whale catching event in a whale bay (hvalvágur). The stranding of a dolphin school is also called Grindir. Whereby their meat is not calculated according to the skinn measure .

Skinn (shilling) is a historic Faroese currency unit and unit of measure for pilot whale meat .

One skinn is equivalent to 38 kg of pilot whale meat and 34 kg of whale fat, for a total of 72 kg. 20 skinn equals 1 gyllin (guilder). The skinnatal (Skinn number) can also be expressed in Gyllin and Skinn. Skinn is still used as the unit of account. Another comparable system is the Faroe Islands' Agricultural Yield Measure: Markatal .

The first recorded grindadráp is that of June 24, 1584 on the uninhabited island of Lítla Dímun . This report is relatively curious as the island consists of vertical cliffs all around and has no suitable harbor. Perhaps it was shepherds from Hvalba who release their animals here every summer (until today) and were able to catch four pilot whales on the occasion. This could also explain the small number of only four whales captured, and at the same time why chroniclers of the time deserved a mention that lasted through the centuries. In any case, it should be the only mention of this inhospitable island in connection with the pilot whale catch.

The second known grindadráp was in Skálafjørður in 1588 , an exact date is not known. Besides the report from 1664, it should remain the only one in these statistics that is not dated. The 115 animals shot are a pretty good average.

On November 14, 1599, Klaksvík appears for the first time in the statistics. The place then consisted of four separate courtyards. The natural harbor of Klaksvík has proven itself time and again as a suitable place for pilot whales. The late season is unusual. The Klaksvík harbor is protected, however, so that the calm sea often creates favorable conditions here, while a grind would be impossible to catch elsewhere.

The two following Grindir were in Hvalvík on September 4th, 1600 and August 8th, 1602. Hvalvík literally means "whale bay" and is located on Sundini , the narrow sound between the two islands of Streymoy and Eysturoy . The whale bay is located south of the narrowest point of the sound and is well suited to catch schools of pilot whales swimming through due to the strong current.

In 1613 two Grindir are handed down for the first time: on May 22nd again in Klakvsvík and on July 14th for the first time in Miðvágur . Miðvágur became known for its particularly large catches of pilot whales. Here, too, the natural conditions are favorable for whaling. In 1614 three pilot whale catches were registered. On July 5th again in Hvalvík, on July 8th in Miðvágur and on August 18th for the first time in Hvalba . This place name also suggests a good whale bay. There is a relatively large sandy beach there.

In 1615 six Grindir were recorded. On July 3rd in Hvalba, July 25th in Klaksvík, on July 28th in Norðskáli , Hvalvík and Klaksvík at the same time. Norðskáli and Hvalvík are on opposite banks of the Sundini, but Klaksvík is a long way away, so they must have been two different schools - and that on Ólavsøka , the national holiday in the Faroe Islands. On September 1st there was another grind in Klaksvík.

Compared to the previous year, 1616 was again a normal year in the statistics: September 7th Klaksvík and October 16th Miðvágur. However, Klaksvík's 150 whales killed were a new record. Also in 1617 there were only two grindadráp to report, on August 9th in Hvalba and on September 5th in Hvalvík. It was similar in 1618 with the two Grindir on July 18 in Klaksvík and on December 13 in Hvalvík. The catch in Hvalvík with 150 animals was not only on par with the previous record, but also the first recorded catch in December. In 1619 it was again Klaksvík and Hvalvík, on July 1st and 9th respectively. On August 5, 1620, Miðvágur reappeared after a four-year break, on September 16, Klaksvík.

While only two catches of pilot whales were recorded in the past five years, in 1621 there were again three. August 1st and September 5th in Hvalvík and September 23rd in Miðvágur. The record of 5 September in Hvalvík with 500 animals will not be set in the same place until 99 years later. On May 26, 1622, the only grindadráp of the year was recorded in Hvalba, albeit with 200 animals. The worst year since 1600 was 1623. While at least 30 pilot whales were caught in Skálafjørður on August 20th, only two were caught in Klaksvík on December 12th. This has been the most unsuccessful grind on record. Again, there is only one Grindadráp from 1624: August 26th in Hvalvík. No grind was recorded in 1625. In 1626 the first grind took place in January. The exact date is not known, only the place Klaksvík with three animals. On September 6th there was a grind in Miðvágur with 100 animals.

In 1627 no grind was documented, while in 1628 Hvalvík and Klaksvík each shared 100 animals (April 24th and June 16th). On June 10, 1629, the only grind of that year took place in Hvalba. The grind on April 23 in Hvalvík 1630 was the only one of the year. Not until 1635 was another grind reported, this time on August 20th in Miðvágur with 400 whales killed. This record was only broken again in Miðvágur 90 years later. Klaksvík reappears on July 14, 1637 and April 2, 1638, then the chronicle breaks off.

Gap in fork time

Due to the fork period from 1655 to 1709, there is only one surviving report of a grind in 1664 from this period. With 1,000 animals killed, it was extraordinarily large. There is also the legend of a grind troll that was sighted at this time.

In the autumn of 1664 a lot of pilot whales came to the Skálafjørður fjord on Eysturoy . Since most of the whales had been killed, a monster could be seen swimming between the whales and the land. The front body, visible above the water, looked like a dog, gray and hairy with long ears, just like an English dog. This tale comes from honest and upright people, and the story is known all over the country. "

As with many Faroese fairy tales, it may have been a species of seal .

When Gabel's henchmen burned down the monopoly trading building on Tinganes in order to destroy evidence of the regime there, large parts of the Faroese chronicle of the Løgting were also lost. It was not until 1709 that this darkest period in the history of the Faroe Islands came to an end and normal conditions returned - with it the complete scour statistics to this day.

The grind on June 24, 2006 was special in that the school was not spotted first by a boat this time, but by the Atlantic Airways line helicopter at Lítla Dímun. Another special feature: The Irish musician Andrew Strong (known from the film The Commitments ) happened to be a witness, as he was a guest at the Jóansøka -Festival on Suðuroy , which was taking place nearby that weekend. It is rare that visitors ever witness a pilot whale catch.

The big grind on August 7th lasted only 15 minutes. A veterinarian was present and had a new grindaknívur ( pilot whale knife ) tried out, with which the killing is even faster and the whales suffer less.

The grind on August 19 in Hvalba was divided among the population of the southern half of Suðuroy, rather than the northern half as usual. This was justified by the fact that a comparably large catch only happened there in June. The white-sided dolphins of August 26th were again distributed to the population in the north of Suðuroy.
