The Steinach is an approximately 22 km long river in southern Hesse and northern Baden-Württemberg , which flows south through the Odenwald and flows into the Neckar from the right at Neckarsteinach .

geography

course

The Steinach rises in the southeastern part of the Hessian district Bergstrasse a few hundred meters north of Ober-Abtsteinach in the area of a small, unwooded plateau. It almost always flows south.

In a very flat and wide valley, it first passes Ober-, then Unter-Abtsteinach , until after about four and a half kilometers of river length the valley deepens and forest slopes come closer to the river.

It crosses over to Baden-Württemberg in the Rhein-Neckar-Kreis , after about 10 km it reaches the village Heiligkreuzsteinach and takes on the Eiterbach from the left. It continues in the deep, wide and open valley to the long-drawn out Schönau district of Altneudorf, still on the middle course; At the entrance to the village, the Hilsbach coming from Wilhelmsfeld joins from the right . After a little over 16 km, it crosses Schönau , where water is fed into a valley spider by the Schafbach from the right and the Greiner Bach from the left.

After more than 18 km, the Steinach passes the Schönau district of Lindenbach, then turns abruptly to the east for the short remainder of its course in the narrower floodplain, which is now overlooked by the heights on both sides by more than 250 m, and thus back to Hesse in the district Mountain road. At its mouth, Neckarsteinach , it finally flows into the Neckar after 22.2 km, almost in the opposite direction .

Catchment area

The hydrological catchment area covers almost 70 km²; it borders in the north on that of the Weschnitz , in the east on that of the Laxbach , in the south on that of the receiving Neckar and smaller tributaries from it, in the west on that of the Kanzelbach and finally that of the Weschnitz again.

The communities of Abtsteinach (Hesse), Heiligkreuzsteinach , Schönau (both Baden-Württemberg) and Neckarsteinach (again Hesse) have a share in the valley .

Water quality

As of 2010, the Steinach is classified in ecological status class II (good) in the water quality module.

history

The Steinach used to be one of the most important rafts on the Neckar. It drove the five Neckarsteinach mills that produced Gerberlohe via a mill ditch .

In the middle of the 18th century river pearl mussels were introduced into the Steinach , which were obtained from the Bavarian Forest, where there are several bodies of water still called Perlbach today . It was the beginning of successful pearl mussel farming. The species needs cold, lime and especially nutrient-poor water, which is why the stream must have had very clean water back then. This changed with the beginning of industrialization, the last mussel fishing in 1965 yielded 14 pearls, after which the pearl mussel became completely extinct in the water.

traffic

State road  535 follows the river at a short distance for almost its entire length ; On the upper reaches, some state roads lead from the side into the south-facing valley, for example in Ober-Abtsteinach the L 3408 from the west and the L 535 from the east, in Unter-Abtsteinach the L 3257 from the west through the Gorxheimer Tal , in Altneudorf, from the west from Schriesheim Coming via Wilhelmsfeld, the L 536. Two sack roads open up smaller side valleys (Eiterbachtal, Schafbachtal), some low-ranking roads connect over partly steep climbs with hilltop settlements and the larger neighboring valleys. In the lower reaches, which are cut deeper, they are partially absent due to the terrain profile and the uninhabited lateral forest heights.
