Steinbach is a rapidly growing small town in the south of the Canadian Prairie Province of Manitoba . After Winnipeg and Brandon , Steinbach ranks third in the province with a population of 13,524. The model for the current growth is Winkler (Manitoba) , a city 100 km southwest with a similar history.

The place was founded in 1874 by German-speaking Mennonites from Ukraine and what was then Russia ( Russian Mennonites ). Because of their pacifist attitude, the Mennonites in southern Russia (today's Ukraine) came under increasing pressure from the Russian tsar. Among other things, they refused to do military service, as they did in Prussia, and insisted that the children be educated in Mennonite private schools. A Canadian publisher of Mennonite literature then invited the traditionally oriented Mennonite community movement “Small Congregation” (today: Evangelical Mennonite Conference ) to emigrate to sparsely populated southern Manitoba.

Even today, more than 2500 Germans or people of German origin live in the city; about half of the population has German ancestors, has German names and speaks German. The current mayor is called Earl Funk. Steinbach is predominantly agriculturally oriented and grew by 60% in the first decade of the 21st century due to an open immigration policy. This is also reflected in the diversity of the faiths represented here, especially the Christian faiths. In addition to the Mennonites, there are Pentecostal , Lutheran , Baptist, and others congregations . There are 45 churches in Steinbach. The Mennonite Heritage Village open-air museum documents the history of Mennonite immigration to Canada.
