Steve Ray Poapst (born January 3, 1969 in Cornwall , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach who has played for the Washington Capitals , Chicago Blackhawks , Pittsburgh Penguins and St. Louis Blues in national hockey, among others League played. Since the 2010/11 season he has been working as an assistant coach for the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League . In 2013 Poapst was inducted into the ECHL Hall of Fame honored.
Career
Steve Poapst was initially active from 1985 to 1987 for the Smiths Falls Bears in the lower-class Canadian junior league Central Junior A Hockey League , before he began studying at the renowned Colgate University and for their ice hockey team, the Red Raiders , in the ECAC Hockey ran up. The Canadian played a total of four seasons for the university team and won the ECAC championship with this in 1990. In the same year, the defender reached the "Frozen Four" of the National Collegiate Athletic Association with the team . However, Colgate lost the final 3: 7 against the University of Wisconsin – Madison . His statistically most successful game year was the 1990/91 season with a yield of 21 points in 32 games. For the 1991/92 season Poapst signed a contract with the Hampton Roads Admirals from the East Coast Hockey League as a free agent . There the left-firing player quickly advanced to a star of the league and won the Riley Cup in his debut season as a professional player with the Admirals . In the following season 1992/93 the title defense failed and the win of the third championship in a row was not achieved.
For Poapst, however, this was a successful season with the appointment to the First All-Star Team of the league. In the same season, the Canadian gained first game practice in the American Hockey League , when he was on the ice for the Baltimore Skipjacks . The following two game years he spent exclusively with the Portland Pirates in the American Hockey League. During this time he won the Calder Cup with the team in the 1993/94 season , two years later another title win was just missed. Poapst, who was never drafted , was signed by the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League in February 1995 . During the 1995/96 season he made his debut for the Caps in the National Hockey League and contributed one goal in nine games. Up until the end of the 20th century, the Canadian's career took place primarily in the American Hockey League. Only in the 1998/99 season he was used again in 22 NHL games with the Washington Capitals, in which he remained pointless and spent eight minutes in the penalty box. In July 2000, he signed a contract with the Chicago Blackhawks as a free agent .
After he had spent the first season in the organization of the Hawks still half in the NHL and AHL squad, he established himself in the following three years as an integral part of the defensive department of the traditional team. The statistically most successful game year was the 2002/03 season with 13 points in 75 games and a +14 balance in the plus / minus statistics. The season 2005/06 began Poapst in the shirt of the Pittsburgh Penguins , before he was transferred to the St. Louis Blues in December 2005 in exchange for Eric Boguniecki . After a total of 318 NHL appearances, the defender ended his active career in the 2006 calendar year.
In the 1994 season Poapst was also active for the New England Stingers in Roller Hockey International . In 20 games he scored six goals, recorded 23 assists and spent 47 minutes in the penalty box. He finished his engagement with a value of -25 in the plus / minus balance.
After his career as an active player, Poapst began working as an ice hockey coach and was initially employed from 2007 to 2010 as the head coach of the Chicago Steel from the US junior league United States Hockey League . For the 2010/11 season he worked in the role of assistant coach at the Rockford IceHogs from the American Hockey League.
