Origin of name

The term Studen comes from Middle High German stûde , New High German Staude , woody bush or shrub. "Names with studs always refer to former or still existing shrub vegetation."

history

school

Politically and ecclesiastically, Studen belonged to the community of Jberg for centuries, from which the independent political communities of Oberiberg and Unteriberg were formed in 1884 .

In 1854, Studen received an actual schoolhouse for the first time, which was replaced by the current building in 1993.

Since 1855, the Voralpendorf , which was previously only easily accessible from Schwyz via the Ibergeregg, has been connected to Einsiedeln and also easily accessible from Zurich .

Church and parish of St. Wendelin

Since the church, school and community center of the old community were located in Oberiberg, under which the school and church path was unreasonable for the Studemer, especially in winter, a chaplain worked as a preacher and teacher in Studen from 1789 . Initially, a house had to serve as a school and prayer room. From 1794 to 1795, today's parish church of St. Wendelin was built. The construction was under the aegis of the Einsiedeln Monastery , which donated a large part of the interior fittings and, with its abbey master builder Martin Oelgass, also provided the site manager. But the way to the independent parish took several stages: a parish vicariate was not set up until 1849, so that a baptismal font could be installed and a cemetery with a cemetery chapel could be created. In 1928, Studen became an independent parish and in 1977 a parish. The parish of Studen is currently looked after by the same priest as the parish of Unteriberg. In 1995 the church was last renovated.

The simple hall church with choir and roof turret has a uniform roof that elegantly follows the concave-convex flowing transition to the choir. The interior is dominated by the effect of the high altar and the two side altars . The high altar picture shows the church patron St. Wendelin in adoration of the Christ child. It was created around 1850 by a Stans painter named Kaiser in the late Nazarene style and replaces the original altarpiece showing St. Michael . The stucco on the walls and ceiling are designed in the late rococo style, while the altars already show elements of classicism . In addition to the altars, the barely raised pulpit and the organ on the rear gallery are worth mentioning. The instrument was built in 1953 by the Späth Orgelbau company and has eleven stops on two manuals and a pedal.

Economy and tourism

Studen is economically shaped by farms and small businesses . The largest operation is the factory shooting range in Ochsenboden.

Tourism plays a not insignificant role. The extensive Sih plain near Studen is a preferred cross-country skiing area, especially in winter . Studen has a cross-country skiing center and a sports restaurant. In the summer season, the region is ideal as a hiking area. In Ochsenboden there is the extensive golf course of the Ybrig Golf Club and (next to the clubhouse) a public restaurant.

With global warming , there is less and less snow, which makes it impossible to prepare cross-country ski trails .
