Sulo Vaattovaara (born July 18, 1962 in Torshälla ) is a Swedish former football player . The defender , who took part in the 1988 Summer Olympics, began a coaching career following his active career.

Career

Vaattovaara comes from the youth of Torshälla-Nyby IS . As a young player, he made his debut in the lower class league for Gällivare SK in the early 1980s . In early 1983 he joined the Stockholm club Hammarby IF , where he made his debut at the side of Sten-Ove Ramberg , Peter Gerhardsson , Michael Andersson and Thomas Dennerby in the Allsvenskan . With the team he failed in his first year in the quarterfinals of the championship finals. In the 1984 season she led coach Bengt Persson to fourth place in the regular time table. After successfully reaching the semi-finals in the championship against Kalmar FF , IFK Norrköping prevailed there after two 0-0 draws on penalties . In the following years he remained a regular player, but slipped with the club into mid-table and missed new finals. Due to his good performance, he made Benny Lennartsson attention, who appointed him to the Swedish Olympic team in 1987. In January 1988 he also made his international debut for the senior national team as part of a four-country tournament when he played alongside the other debutants Lars Eriksson , Stefan Rehn and Hans Eklund in a 4-1 win over the GDR selection , Dennis Schiller and Hans Eskilsson .

Before the start of the 1988 season, Vaattovaara moved within the Allsvenskan to IFK Norrköping. At his new club, he immediately established himself in the defensive line and became a long-runner who hardly missed a game in the following years. In the summer of that year he was part of the Swedish squad for the soccer competition of the Olympic Games . In the team around Jonas Thern , Roland Nilsson , Sven Andersson and Göran Arnberg , he was only a supplementary player and only came to one game. At the side of Göran Holter , Peter Lönn and Jan Hellström , he managed the year successfully, however, in the national cup the team won the final against Örebro SK . The cup win was followed by another title in the following season. After he had contributed to reaching the championship finals as runner-up in all 22 games of regular time, Vaattovaara led the club in the championship final against Malmö FF . After each victory, the decision was made in a third match, which the club from Norrköping won on penalties.

Vaattovaara returned to the national team in 1990. After he had completed his second international match in February of that year, he missed participation in the 1990 World Cup . It was not until the autumn that he ran for the selection again. At the same time he reached the championship final again with his club, but this time the IFK Göteborg prevailed. After a reform of the league system, he narrowly missed the double with the club in the 1991 season . Although he won the national cup with the club again in the summer, in the championship it was only enough to finish second behind defending champion IFK Göteborg. After two more runners-up he slipped with the club in the middle of the decade in the table, in the 1995 season the club only saved itself in the relegation games from relegation to the second division. Two years later he left the club and ended his career as a playing assistant coach at local rivals IF Sylvia . With the club he qualified in 1999 for the newly created Superettan , but ended his active career.

In 2000 Vaattovaara took over the coaching position at third division Sandvikens IF . With the team he was in the relegation battle in the following years and was dismissed after relegation in 2002. He then worked at Hagaströms SK before he returned to his long-term IFK Norrköping play station as a junior coach . In the summer of 2005, after Stefan Hellberg's dismissal, he moved up to interim coach with Tony Martinsson until the end of the second division season . He then worked as a youth and assistant coach for the club.

In 2009 Vaattovaara took over a coaching position at Svenska Fotbollförbundet and was part of Hans Lindbom's coaching team . In the summer of the year he left IFK Norrköping and took over the coaching position at IF Sylvia. Although he managed to stay in division 1 with the team , he announced his departure at the end of the year. He returned to IFK Norrköping as a junior coach.
