R.Br. |
The marsh rushes ( Eleocharis ), also called Sumpfried , are a genus of plants within the sour grass family (Cyperaceae). The 300 species are distributed almost worldwide.
description
The Eleocharis species are mostly perennial, rarely annual, herbaceous plants . The above-ground parts of the plant are bare. The upright, rush- like, simple stems have no leaf blades . The stem leaves are only present as leaf sheaths at the base.
The terminal, spike-like inflorescence is predominantly ovate and without bracts. The husks are arranged in a spiral. The flowers are hermaphroditic. The perianth consists of up to eight bristles. They each have three or two stamens and carpels . Remaining stylus bases (stylopodium) can be seen on the nuts .
Site conditions
They are rush-like plants in wet and swampy locations. While many species grow on the edge of the water, numerous species live submerged.
