Life

From the age of six to seventeen, Sven Gerich grew up in a children's home run by the Inner Mission in the Wiesbaden district of Biebrich . After attending the Evangelical Kindergarten in the main parish, he attended the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Schule and received his secondary school diploma from the Werner-von-Siemens-Schule. He then completed vocational training as a construction and furniture maker . Later he took a position as a full-time trainer for the gymnastics department at the Biebrich gymnastics club . In 1995 he began to work in his adoptive father's Gerich print shop , which he ran from 2000 to 2013 as an equal partner . Sven Gerich lives with his partner Helge in a same-sex registered civil partnership . Sven Gerich and Helge Gerich got married in July 2018.

Political career

Gerich's political career began in 2003 when he met the former mayor of Wiesbaden, Achim Exner , who was running again for the state parliament . Shortly afterwards he joined the SPD. From 2006 until his election as Lord Mayor in 2013, he was a member of the city council in Wiesbaden and from 2009 parliamentary managing director of the SPD parliamentary group. In September 2011 he was elected group chairman. In a runoff election for the mayor's election on March 10, 2013, Gerich won with 50.9% to 49.1% against the incumbent Helmut Müller ( CDU ).

As Lord Mayor, Gerich was a member of various control bodies of the municipal societies of the state capital Wiesbaden. So he was u. a. Chairman of the board of directors of Nassauische Sparkasse and chairman of the supervisory board of the municipal holding company.

public perception

At the beginning of his tenure, Gerich u. a. criticized by the Bund der Steuerpayers , because immediately after taking office he had his new office renovated and furnished for more than 300,000 euros and commissioned the work without a public tender. He defended this act by stating that most of the renovation work was necessary due to the age of the building stock.

Shortly before Christmas 2017, Gerich and his husband invited the Mayor of Mainz, Michael Ebling, and his life partner to a restaurant and paid the bill of 1019.70 euros from the city's treasury. A preliminary investigation into this matter was closed at the end of 2019 against a monetary requirement.

At the beginning of 2019, the Wiesbaden public prosecutor started investigations on suspicion of taking advantage of a complaint from the former city manager Ralph Schüler against Gerich . These were discontinued in October of the same year. In this context, Gerich stated on January 24, 2019 that he no longer wanted to run for the mayoral election in May 2019. He justified this, among other things, with the fact that his husband and father also received anonymous threatening letters.

On June 29th, Gerich officially handed over the office of Lord Mayor to Gert-Uwe Mende . Two days later he had his last day at work and received the Commander's Award for Public Service from Colonel Todd Fish for his commitment to improving German-American relations.

In October 2019, the sons of restaurateur Roland Kuffler stated in a 15-page declaration to the city of Wiesbaden that Gerich had accepted invitations and discounts from the Kuffler family to a greater extent than he had previously admitted. In this context, the Munich public prosecutor's office investigated suspicion of taking or granting an advantage against Gerich and Kuffler. The Munich District Court sentenced the court to a fine in June 2020 and ordered the forfeiture of bribes amounting to 20,000 euros.
